What changed in the October demo update?

LICHTHUND’s Steam announcement confirms that the third episode is now included. The update also improves gamepad navigation, addresses accidental switches between mouse and controller prompts, fixes some cutscene-skipping problems, adjusts rhythm-game positioning and timing, and adds AZERTY keyboard support.

The game moves between band management, narrative choices and musical performances. Controller handling and audio synchronization can influence that transition. The new patch targets some of those friction points; without our own play session, it would be inaccurate to say the fixes have solved every issue.

The studio explicitly says the expanded demo supports gamepad as well as mouse and keyboard, including play on Steam Deck. That is a developer statement about usability, not an independently verified performance certification by GamerHeadlines.

Managing the band between performances

ROCKBEASTS casts you as the manager of a struggling grunge band in an alternative 1990s America. Your responsibilities, according to the official description, include arranging gigs, keeping equipment usable, controlling limited cash, assembling setlists and handling interpersonal conflicts.

The band may have to sacrifice money, morale or creative control to reach a concert. Money spent on rehearsal space isn’t available for another expense. A commercially attractive opportunity might create conflict with the musicians’ creative identity. A good management RPG can connect those decisions to relationships and later performances; ROCKBEASTS is explicitly designed around that connection.

The listing also describes rhythm-based gigs, where the group’s preparations culminate in a performance. This gives the game two ways to hold the player’s attention: strategic decisions outside a show and active input when the band takes the stage. Whether both are equally rewarding across the full game remains untested here.

Where does the writing and voice cast fit?

LICHTHUND credits writer Jakub Szamałek on the game’s official demo description and identifies voice performances involving Matthew Mercer, Sam Riegel, Liam O’Brien and Iggy Pop. Critical Role is also involved in publishing and creative development. Those facts explain the attention around the game, but they don’t guarantee that the branching story will react convincingly to the player’s decisions.

A more useful question for the three-episode demo is whether an early choice produces consequences beyond a different line of dialogue. Does protecting band morale cost money? Does a risky gig change which venues or contacts become available? The developers advertise choice-driven outcomes; the demo provides a public opportunity to examine their early implementation.

For background on the partnership and PS5 announcement, see GamerHeadlines’ earlier report: Critical Role Joins Rockbeasts, PS5 Launch Set for January 2027. This article focuses on the playable demo and its systems, rather than repeating the cast announcement.

What to pay attention to during the demo

Three questions should tell a curious player more than a generic list of advertised features:

  • Management pressure: do scarce resources force meaningful trade-offs between gear, rehearsals and the well-being of the band?
  • Narrative consequences: do interpersonal choices affect what happens later, or are they mostly immediate flavor?
  • Performance payoff: do setlist and equipment decisions change how a rhythm sequence feels and what happens afterward?

These are suggested ways to assess the public build, not observations we are claiming to have made while playing it.

Where to play, and what’s next

The ROCKBEASTS demo is free on Steam. LICHTHUND has announced a January 2027 release window for the full game, without a confirmed day in the October update. Availability and platform details can change, so check the official game listing for the latest status.

The three-episode demo lets interested players judge how band management and interactive shows work together. The long-term consequences of those choices will need coverage based on the finished game.
