Batman Arkham Knight was previously announced as a next gen exclusive Batman game, developed by Rocksteady, who were behind the excellent Batman Arkham Asylum and Batman Arkham City games. As it turns out, the ‘Arkham Knight’ isn’t Batman himself but instead an original character developed by Rocksteady in conjunction with DC Comics, made specifically for this new game. Speaking to vg247, Rocksteady’s producer Dax Ginn called the process of making an original character in the Batman universe a “terrifying” one. Ginn continues: “The opportunity is exciting, but the expectation [from fans] is off the scale. That’s why working with DC is so awesome for us, because those guys are so experienced, and it’s obviously something they do a lot of.”
The Arkham Knight is designed to be one of the few villains that can take Batman head on and even match his strength, thanks to a fancy suit and gadgets of his own. A private demo at GDC shown to a select few individuals revealed a short demo where the Arkham Knight incapacitates Batman during a struggle, while also using a gun, something which Batman himself would never use.
The preview demo also revealed many new aspects of the Batmobile, Batman’s iconic crime fighting vehicle of choice. The Batmobile will be drivable for the first time, allowing you to navigate the vastness of Gotham City with ease. It’s also been revealed that the Batmobile can drive up walls and the ceiling, making this perhaps one of the coolest vehicles to come to gaming. Rocksteady have released some new screenshots from the game, showing Batman, the Batmobile and the Arkham Knight, which you can view below. Batman Arkham Knight is set to release on October 14 2014 for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
