RuneScape is heading to Xbox for the first time in the franchise’s 25-year history. RuneScape: Dragonwilds 1.0 is scheduled to launch on September 15, 2026, bringing the survival RPG to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Game Pass.

The new adventure supports solo play and cooperative groups of up to four players. Rather than reproducing RuneScape’s established format, Dragonwilds places its quests, skills, magic, enemies, and lore inside a survival game built around exploration, combat, resource gathering, and construction.

According to Xbox Wire, the 1.0 release follows an 18-month period in which the game’s map tripled in size and added three regions. Its developers are also planning continued updates through 2027 and beyond.

Survival and RuneScape progression meet on Ashenfall

RuneScape: Dragonwilds takes place on Ashenfall, a hidden continent within Gielinor. The hand-crafted setting provides a new location for the series while retaining recognizable elements of RuneScape lore, including established creatures, equipment, skills, and magic.

Players can embark on quests and develop martial, magical, crafting, and everyday survival skills from level 1 to level 99. Progress through each skill rewards unique abilities and spells, connecting the game’s survival loop directly to RuneScape-style character advancement.

That progression includes Skill Spells with practical and combat applications. Players can summon a spectral axe to cut down trees instantly, blink away from danger, turn bones into peaches, conjure fish from a lake, explode ore veins, and perform an unusually high jump. These abilities give resource gathering and exploration a magical component rather than treating every survival task as a conventional manual process.

Enemies, building, and cooperative play

Ashenfall contains perilous vaults and an assortment of hostile creatures. Xbox Wire names Black Knights, Zogres, Chromatic Dragons, and Kalphites among the returning threats. Dragonwilds also introduces the Garou, a new creature for players to confront.

The combat and exploration systems can be approached alone or with a cooperative party of up to four players. That choice carries across the wider adventure: the game is designed for both solo RuneScape players and groups that want to gather resources, develop skills, complete quests, and explore Ashenfall together.

Construction is another central part of the survival structure. The building system includes hundreds of individual pieces that can be combined to create customized homes. While Xbox Wire does not detail every construction option, the scale of the piece library indicates that players will have substantial control over the shape of their settlements.

The presentation also draws from RuneScape’s musical history. Dragonwilds features reorchestrated versions of classic RuneScape tracks alongside hours of newly composed music.

Player feedback changed the road to 1.0

The development roadmap was shaped around player feedback. According to the official announcement, that input led to dedicated servers being launched earlier than originally planned, as well as the introduction of additional combat and quest content.

The game’s world also expanded considerably during the preceding 18 months. Its map tripled in size, gaining three regions with their own area bosses, material upgrades, and recognizable RuneScape equipment. Those additions provide the foundation for the September 1.0 release rather than representing the end of development.

Plans extend beyond launch, with a post-1.0 content roadmap continuing through 2027 and beyond. Specific future updates were not outlined in the announcement, but the stated schedule establishes continued content support after the initial Xbox release.

Xbox release date and supported consoles

RuneScape: Dragonwilds 1.0 is scheduled to arrive on September 15, 2026. On Xbox, it will be limited to Xbox Series X|S, with no Xbox One version listed in the official announcement. The game is also scheduled to join Xbox Game Pass on the same date.

For RuneScape, the release represents a specific expansion onto Xbox hardware after 25 years. For players, the central proposition is equally clear: a solo or four-player survival RPG that carries RuneScape’s level progression, quests, creatures, spells, construction, lore, and music into the new continent of Ashenfall.
