Sea of Thieves Season 21 is landing, timed to coincide with Talk Like a Pirate Day, Rare and Xbox Wire have announced. The update arrives alongside a Free Play Weekend that opens the game to everyone across all supported platforms, with no Xbox Game Pass subscription required.
The headline addition is the Parley Pennant, a new item equipped through the ship’s flag box. When raised, pirates who sail within range of your vessel are informed that you want to talk, giving crews a clear signal before anyone reaches for a cutlass. Rare suggests the pennant can be used to propose an Alliance, tackle challenges together, or show off tattoos.
Free Play Weekend and Talk Like a Pirate Day
The Free Play Weekend runs from September 17 at 15:00 UTC through September 21 at 17:00 UTC. During that window, the game is free to install and enjoy. Crews that make good use of the Parley Pennant during the Talk Like a Pirate Day event can earn the Parley Proficiency Sails.
Xbox Game Pass subscribers have a separate benefit to claim: the Vociferous Speaking Trumpet, available as an in-game reward between September 17 and October 31.
Golden Legends Sweepstakes and Pirate Emporium
The Microsoft Rewards Sea of Thieves: Golden Legends Sweepstakes runs September 17 through October 31 in the US, Canada, Mexico, the UK, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. The grand prize is a one-of-a-kind Golden Legends Xbox Series X and a matching controller, plus one year of Xbox Game Pass Premium. Additional controllers and subscriptions are second-place prizes in each territory.
Microsoft Reward Points can be used in participating territories to acquire Ancient Coins for the Pirate Emporium, and a limited-time bundle includes the Loquacious Figurehead. Elsewhere, Lone Survivor, a new Dynamic Background for Xbox, is available in the Personalisation Menu.
Events, Custom Seas, and a Refreshed Seasonal Track
Season 21 also carries a packed calendar of events such as Fight Nights and Bilge Rats Weekenders, new gameplay features including continuing expansions to the Custom Seas mode, and bonuses celebrating 25 years of Xbox. A refreshed Seasonal track adds new rewards, with the Flame’s Light Lantern awaiting at the end of the track.
