When is Minecraft not really Minecraft? When it’s Lego Minecraft of course. Really in this aggressively capitalist world where reality TV stars have their own fragrances, Vin Diesel develops games about Vin Diesel and Legend of Zelda is a monopoly set we should have seen this coming. But the fact remains that one of the greatest post-modern crossovers of all time is soon going to be available at all good toy stores.
Now you can play Minecraft but for real. That may limit some of the more MMO elements that the game is known for but for many people the fact that you’ll be able to touch your constructions will make up for many of its shortcomings. So far we’ve got to see The Farm which features Minecraft staples like Steve, giant spiders and a skeleton. For real craftphiles there’s even a Jack-o-lantern which looks like it may fit neatly as a replacement head for Steve. Also included are a neat pixelated shovel, some sheep, a treasure chest and all the building blocks for the terrain.
In truth this isn’t the first time that Majong’s sandbox build-’em-up has flirted with a Lego release. Back in 2012 a Lego fan group released their own take on the cult selling indie game. Their version was actually so well received that Lego released it for purchase, though on a relatively limited scale. Since then it has only been a matter of time before Lego released a full line of Minecraft sets to get fanboys and girls flapping about in delight.
Rumour has it that the next set to be released will be The Cave that will feature zombies, lava and TNT. If Legos other highly successful crossovers like Star Wars and Batman are anything to go buy then we can be sure that this is only the beginning of a long relationship. No doubt with the right creativity and hands on attitude players will be able to replicate their in game masterpieces on their living room floor. But the real question is, does this mean Steve will be making it into the next Lego Movie? Here’s hoping.
