Ataris Adventure, released in 1979, contained the very first video game Easter egg to be discovered by its players. There is a 1- pixel object commonly referred to as the “Gray Dot”, the player must bounce the avatar along the bottom wall to grab the dot. Bringing the dot to the east end of the corridor below the Yellow castle causes a wall object to become effectively invisible, allowing the player to pass into a room displaying the words “Created by Warren Robinett”.
This is just the first example of many Easter eggs in games that have been discovered by players throughout the generations of gaming, here I list six Easter eggs that you may not know of. Some will be oldies and some will be newbies, but did you catch these Easter eggs yourself?
Play As Master Hand – Super Smash Bros Melee for Game Cube
This isn’t so much an Easter egg as it is a glitch but it’s pretty cool none the less. Taking seven years to find, this glitch enables you to play through the game without actually choosing a playable character instead you can play as The Master Hand, full with his move set and powers. Nintendo claims this is an accident but I’m sure not too many people mind.
Chris Houlihan- The Legend Of Zelda A Link To The Past for Super Nintendo
Before the release of A Link To The Past on Super Nintendo in 1992, Nintendo Power Magazine held a contest for die hard fans to get their name in the future title. By using the Pegasus Boots to travel from Kakariko Village through the forest to Hyrule Castle, you’ll gain access to a secret room containing a hidden message from the contest winner Chris Houlihan.
L.M.D- Donkey Kong for the Atari 400
This little classic isn’t a “hey come find me” Easter egg, its more of a signature by coder Landon Dyer. In 2008 Dyer wrote in a blog about an Easter egg he left in Donkey Kong and that nobody ever found it. Unfortunately at the time he couldn’t recall how to see it but mentioned that it was so small it wasn’t really worth the trouble of looking for it. After 26 year (yes 26 long years) Don Hodges, the guy who fixed Pac Mans kill screen thanks to his hacking skills, discovered the specific set of actions all from using an emulator. First, set specific high score, then kill off your remaining lives, the last one by falling. Then set the games difficulty to 4 then wait patiently for the title screen to appear. If done so correctly the reward for your hard work is indeed, Landon Dyer’s initials on the title scree, worth it?

Mew- Pokemon Red and Blue for Game boy
One of the most bizarre things in Pokemon games are the amount of mysterious things that can be found, talking to strangers sometimes give you random pieces of dialog that at the time doesn’t make sense. A lot like the fact that the powerful Pokemon Mew is in the coding of Red and Blue but you are unable to possess it. The only legit way you were able to possess a Mew back then was from professional competitions. It took a die hard fan 3 years to uncover a way to possess Mew, since then a few more ways have been found.
Legend of Zelda Reference- Thief for PC, Xbox and PlayStation
During chapter 5 as soon as you open the door, there will be an elevator that goes down for part of the mission, while following the shafts as you would for the mission you need to turn right instead of left and follow the pathway. Going down the stair case and turning on any lights to evade any enemies you will see a bird cage, turn right and head down the stairs then take a left down a hallway where you will find a glowing pot. Smash the pot and receive a new collectible “Childhood memories”.
LOST Diablo III for PC, Xbox and PlayStation
In Act II- City of blood mission, right outside Khasim Outpost’s east gate in the stinging winds desert there you’ll find a wrecked ship. There you’ll find a total of 6 scrolls throughout the game and play throughs, each with their own number, while lined up they order in 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42. The first letter of each scroll spells out D-H-A-R-M-A. Nothing is known about the reason for these scrolls but as a LOST fan I just had to add it in.
