For a long time since Call of Duty’s rise to mass popularity, a topic of discussion and often criticism is the lack of progress made to Call of Duty games’ engine. This has since been mitigated by Call of Duty: Ghosts which featured an all new next gen engine used for both the last and current gen versions. This trend is being continued by the upcoming title this year, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. A whole new engine is being used for the next gen focused game and Sledgehammer Games is going for the most photo-realistic and immersive experience yet. Co-founder of Sledgehammer Michael Condrey sheds some light on the new game engine with a few comments from Edge Magazine (cited in gamezone):
“Although what the studio means by ‘new’ in this context isn’t what the internet means when it complains about the old COD engine.
We have new rendering, animation, physics and audio systems”
Many key features of game engines usually carry over from the previous ones so it’s understandable that they will still use the same resources. The new engine is ‘new’ in the sense that it’s a completely new build, but it will still re-use features of the older engines as well. However it’s a good step for the series to once again push the graphical boundaries and wow audiences with the technology that they present. Advanced Warfare is releasing this November for mutliple systems and we’ll see more at E3 next week, with a special presentation.
