Sony Computer Entertainment has confirmed that Sucker Punch Productions, developer of games such as the Sly Cooper and inFamous franchises, has suffered a large round of layoffs. The exact number of employees affected has not been disclosed, however a statement made by Sony revealed that long-term veterans of the studio (including employees who worked on the original Sly Cooper games) were among them.
When reached for a comment, Sony spokesperson told Eurogamer the following:
“SCEE can confirm a reduction in workforce has taken place at Sucker Punch Productions,”
Sucker Punch Productions has also released a statement regarding the situation:
“Sucker Punch is appreciative of the tremendous work team members contributed to the inFamous and Sly Cooper series, and wishes them the best in their next endeavours.”
The reasons for the layoffs are unknown, whether due to company restructuring within Sucker Punch Productions or the result of the near-completion on the latest inFamous content, Sony Computer Entertainment has yet to reveal them. Tweets made by fellow colleagues and Sucker Punch employees have been empathetic towards those affected, sharing their sadness at the situation.
Sucker Punch software engineer, Josh Jersild, tweeted:
“Some good friends are no longer employed at Sucker Punch, I’m going to miss having them around. Guys and gals, my thoughts are with you.”
Sucker Punch Productions released one of the most highly anticipated PlayStation 4 games in the form of inFamous: Second Son back in March of this year, and is currently finishing up development on its standalone expansion, inFamous: First Light.
