Star Citizen Dev on Mod Support and Console Release

Star Citizen is a space combat and trading simulator that’s perpetually been crowd-funded since its initial 2012 Kickstarter. Throughout its development, different modules have been added to it, such as Arena Commander and the recently revealed first-person shooter mode. To date, the developer behind the title, Cloud Imperium Games, is about halfway through to reaching its $62 million stretch goal milestone, with $61,547,460 already raised for the game’s development at the time of writing.

In speaking with Dark Side of Gaming, Star Citizen’s engine technical director, Sean Tracy, outlined numerous things regarding the game’s performance features – such as DirectX 12, multi-CPU and mod support, and PC requirements. What’s more is that Tracy also discussed the possibility of there eventually being a console version of the game.

When asked whether or not he thought mod support is essential to a PC games or whether it might endanger DLC plans in general, Tracy responded positively, saying that mods is something that’s quite dear to him, and that he personally thinks they are essential to PC games and that such support will be implemented into Star Citizen. However, the caveat is that mod support may only be available for certain modules of the game.

This is a topic that’s very close to my heart as modding is what gave me and many of the best people I’ve worked and continue to work with their jobs in the industry,” Tracy told Dark Side of Gaming.

I once heard someone say something to that effect that if you have to wait for someone to pay you to do something, you don’t really want to do it! I personally think mods are essential. The undercutting of DLC is really a console and even a classic retail release issue that won’t be present in Star Citizen. We hope to have many kinds of modding available to certain modules of the game (as obviously it’d be hard to mod an MMO!).

With the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One now entering their second year of circulation in Western markets, Tracy was asked whether or not the new consoles are powerful enough to run Star Citizen or if Cloud Imperium Games even have plans to bring the game to the current-gen consoles, after its release on PC, to which Tracy said that the developer has no plans to bring Star Citizen to consoles–yet.

There are currently no plans to bring the game to consoles,” Tracy replied. “With that said, we don’t ever want to say ‘never.’ There’s always a possibility for a console launch down the road, but since most of our development is PC specific, it would be difficult to make Star Citizen for a console in the near term.

Whilst certain modules are already available to Star Citizen backers, the full version of the game is slated to release at some point in 2016. It’s closest competitor, Elite: Dangerous, is slated to release next month. You can read Dark Side of Gaming’s full interview with Sean Tracy via the source link below.
