After staying silent for at most a couple of weeks, Cloud Imperium Games has finally updated its list of stretch goals to incorporate the developer’s recently surpassed crowdfunding milestone of $65 million.
Star Citizen’s new stretch goal will now add the ambitious promise of modular customisation for players’ different ships. Titled “Enhanced Ship Modularity”, this new milestone in the game’s development will allow for players of the game to outfit their ships with different modules, enabling players to finely tune the role of a bog standard ship instead of using an off-the-shelf model (which may not fit the exact role you may want to fulfill on its own).
“We are looking to overhaul any suitable ships (including the Cutlass, Avenger, Retaliator and Redeemer) to allow many modular components to be available as swap-outs,” reads Cloud Imperium Games’ description of the new stretch goal.
The developer proceeded to then example the use of a Redeemer being outfitted with swappable modules. With the introduction of modules, it would allow for ships like the Redeemer (typically a boarding gunship) to be outfitted with the tools needed for long-term exploration or for bounty hunting.
“For example: if you have purchased a Redeemer, then using the new system you would have a variety of new modules available to refit the ship, internal and external, to suit your play requirements,” the developer continued.
“If you wanted to make it a Bounty Hunter ship, you could buy a “Stasis Chamber module” for the lower deck and you would be able to capture and store fugitives to be delivered for their bounties at your leisure.
Fed up of Bounty hunting? Swap in a larger cargo module in the lower deck to make that profitable run you have been planning for a while, or add the Explorer Module with deployable vehicle for some planetside recon.“
Pre-configured variants of the same model for specific roles will be offered up as well, though it’s unknown when such variants will be available. Stock models are inferred to still be available as well, which will enable players to adapt the hull of their ship from the ground up for their personal and / or specific use if they so desire.
Even though the current grand total for Star Citizen’s crowdfunding at the time of writing is nearly $66.5 million, Cloud Imperium Games have still to update the stretch goal list to include a milestone for reaching $66 million. Currently, the developer’s next stretch goal still remains as “REDACTED”, like it was before the $65 million milestone was added.
