Steam Game Earth: 2066 Pulled By Valve For Misleading Gamers

by GH Staff

Earth: 2066 was launched on Steam several weeks ago.  Its launch was a result of Valve’s Greenlight program.  Shortly after its release, however, it drew massive criticism from the players.  Those who purchased Earth: 2066 were upset at its apparent lack of quality.  The biggest concern for Valve, however, was false marketing.

Earth: 2066 was originally marketed as a first-person open-world game, set in in a post-apocalyptic world.  Based on its original marketing alone, players had a very exciting idea to look forward to.  The final product, however, left many disappointed.  Players directed their frustration toward Valve.  Many were beginning to mistrust Valve’s dedication to service, stating that Valve is supposed to protect its customers from material below a certain standard.

In response to this, Valve is willing to fully refund all consumers who paid the full $19.99 for Earth: 2066.  Valve also responded by pulling the game from its early access program.  As far as the legitimacy of the Greenlight program, Valve chose not to respond to comments on the situation.  A Valve representative, however, did state that while the company does allow developers to “make their own decisions about promotion, features, pricing and publication”, Steam “does require honesty from developers in the marketing of their games.”  The refunds for consumers of Earth: 2066 will be available until May 19th.
