Sunset Overdrive, the Xbox One-exclusive, open world, third-person shooter developed by Insomniac Games and published by Microsoft Studios, releases tomorrow, October 28th, and reviews for the highly anticipated video game are consistently positive across the board.
Critics cite the game’s fresh, creative, and fun gameplay mechanics – in addition to its self-awareness and dialed-in attention to player satisfaction – as reasons for Sunset Overdrive‘s ability to stand above other games that have released this year.

Sunset Overdrive – OD’ing on Positive Reviews
Game Revolution – 100/100:
“Sunset Overdrive doesn’t take itself seriously, making the action and character of the game stand-out about as much as its vibrant color scheme. Sequences that slightly alter gameplay or offer up a big boss manage to delight beyond most of what’s available on the latest consoles today.”
Joystiq – 100/100:
“The bottom line is that regardless of whether we’re talking about character appearance, weapons, special abilities or buffs, Sunset Overdrive piles the number of options you can choose from sky-high. No matter who you choose to be, what weapons you equip, what playstyle you choose, or how you deck out your secondary abilities, everything feels valid and worthwhile.”
GameFront – 92/100:
“Fact is, I had more unadulterated fun playing Sunset Overdrive than nearly any other game this year. You can tell that Insomniac had a blast making this game, and that joy transferred directly into me as I bounced on balloons in an amusement park, on to the rails of a rollercoaster, and then rained down explosive hairspray bombs to result in a brilliant orange explosion of goo.”
IGN – 90/100:
“Big, gorgeous, and a hell of a lot of fun. Never has getting from point A to point B in an open-world game provided so much enjoyment. It provides some of the most fun, frantic, and fantastic gaming I’ve had on the Xbox One”
Hardcore Gamer – 80/100:

For those unfamiliar with Sunset Overdrive, the title is set in the fictional metropolis of Sunset City in the year 2027. Players will play as a fully customizable FizzCo employee who fights the OD’d with a large arsenal of absurd, creative weaponry. The aforementioned “OD’d” are humans who have transformed into mutant monsters after consuming an energy drink.
Sunset Overdrive puts an emphasis on swift, parkour-esque traversal, with the utilization of wall-running and zip-lining necessary for navigation of Sunset City.
GamerHeadlines has previously covered the game in detail – praising it for its emphasis on fun, innovative gameplay mechanics and ultimately stating that it is exactly what the Xbox One needs.
As previously mentioned, Sunset Overdrive releases tomorrow exclusively for the Xbox One.
What are your thoughts on Sunset Overdrive? Does the Xbox One (or the games market) in general need more zany, off-the-wall titles like it? Also, do you think the game is a system seller? Why or why not?
