After Ken Levine shut down Irrational Games to focus on narrative driven digital downloads, people have been wondering about the state of Bioshock. Though Irrational Games created the original and the latest edition Infinite, Take-Two owns the Bioshock license. So basically it was only a matter of time before different developers brought the very popular series back. And Take-Two’s CEO Strauss Zelnick talked about the state of the franchise in his latest address to investors.
“We haven’t given any color on how you should think about it yet except we do believe it’s beloved; we think it’s important [and] certainly something that we’re focused on; something 2K Marin will be responsible for shepherding going forward. I don’t want to say much else except to agree with you. I think there’s a lot of upside in that franchise. It hasn’t necessarily been realized yet. And the question for the future, assuming we decide to answer the question, would be, how do you stay true to that creatively? How do you do something exciting? And how do you do expand the market? That would be the natural drill. We’re starting from a good point on it. And certainly it’s been a great piece of business for us; it’s been a profitable piece of business.”
While recently Take-Two announced that they shipped 6 million copies of Bioshock Infinite, VGChartz has the sales figures at just under 3.5 million units. But this is a storied franchise that needs to be treated with care by 2K Marin; however, the last time anyone checked 2K Marin was dissolved into the Bay Area 2K Studio. The developer, which originally branched off from Irrational Games, developed Bioshock 2 and The Bureau: XCOM Declassified: the poor reception of the latter resulted in the supposed absorption of 2K Marin. So did Take-Two’s CEO make a mistake or is 2K Marin officially reopened? Furthermore, the recent departure of Bay Area 2K’s studio head Robert Fergusson to Microsoft has left that place at a standstill as well. Either way, if Zelnick’s quote was any indication, I would not expect another Bioshock title anytime soon.
