Tekken’s series producer Katsuhiro Harada commented that Tekken 7’s story is ‘too dark’, when replying to a fan on Twitter.
It’s too dark… But stay tuned. RT @slippedbeast I am very excited to see the story for tekken 7.

Of course, this could be an exaggeration or hyperbole, but it’s likely he could be telling the truth. Tekken 7 represents the climax of the Mishima family’s long and violent conflict and we’ll see the finale between Kazuya and Heihachi’s rivalry. The story of Tekken 7 will also dig deep into the origins of the ‘Devil Gene’, the strange power that grants the Mishima family demonic powers. According to the reveal trailer, this power may have come from Kazumi, Heihachi’s former wife.
It’s clear that, at least to some degree, Tekken 7 will have a much darker approach to the story than previous games. Most Tekken games usually focus on a wide variety of characters, each with storylines of different tones and pacing, whilst the Mishima storyline is a central theme. There’s no doubt we’ll see some kind of violent confrontation to end all the conflict within the Mishima family. Despite dealing with themes of demons and magic, the series’ narrative isn’t all that ‘dark’ for the most part and it can actually be quite goofy sometimes. Whether or not the 7th installment keeps this atmosphere is yet to be seen.
Tekken 7 is planned for release on PS4 and Xbox One, and will hit Japanese arcades in February of this year. So far, Tekken 7 has introduced 4 new characters: Katarina, Claudio, Lucky Chloe and Shaheen, and it’s possible that Kazumi will also be playable.
