The HTC One M8 will need a lower price to compete with the Samsung Galaxy S5

by GH Staff

In our recent articles we discussed how awesome the Samsung galaxy 4 is in 2014, now we see the HTC One M8 price. So, to compete with the best of the best, HTC will be hard-pressed to release a device that is either just as good, or somewhat cheaper. Neither the HTC One M8 (also reffered to as the HTC One 2), nor the Samsung Galaxy S5 have been officially released or revealed, but there are solid enough rumors to safely estimate what features the two competing phones will sport. The HTC One M8 will most likely be revealed on the 25th of March, while the Samsung Galaxy S5 will make an appearance at next week’s Mobile World Congress.

Display-wise, the Samsung Galaxy S5 will most likely sport a 5.25 inch AMOLED screen, with a 559 ppi, 2560×1440 resolution. In contrast, the HTC One M8 is expected to have a similarly big screen, around the 5 inch marker, but will most likely have a regular 1080p resolution, with 441 ppi. While both screens are obviously great, Samsung will most likely win in this department

On the hardware side, Samsung is also expected to be slightly ahead with the S5. Rumors about a whooping 3GB of RAM are circulating already. In addition, the S5 will use an Exynos 6 or Snapdragon 805 CPU. At the same time, the HTC One M8 is most likely to run on a Qualcomm MSM8974AB Snapdragon 800 Krait 400 CPU, clocked around 2.3 GHz. While both will be extremely fast, Samsung’s offering is slightly better once again. In terms of storage, both phones will have the same variants, mainly a 32GB version and a 64GB version.

There’s no clear winner in this department, as ultimately, software is a subjective matter, with preference playing a key role. The Samsung Galaxy S5 will surely use Android KitKat 4.4, while the HTC will use Android with the Sense UI, which seems to be extremely popular among HTC fans. It boils down to what you prefer here.

Normally, the winner of this category would be HTC, since an aluminium finish is generally preferred over Samsung’s plastic cases. However, Samsung hinted at releasing an aluminium version of the Galaxy S5 this year (learning from mistakes, most likely), so again, no clear winner can be set in this category.

Of course, fans of one or the other will most likely go with their favorite manufacturer. The thing is, Samsung’s phone seems to be better in many regards. This means that HTC has to compensate somehow, and win over customers through a more accessible price. Right now, the estimates show that the Samsung Galaxy S5 will be priced at around the $1000 mark. Most experts anticipate that the new HTC One M8 will cost slightly less, more specifically $900. We believe that while the HTC One M8 will surely be a great phone, with some very powerful hardware under the hood, HTC would do well to drop the price further to around $800. That’s the only reasonable way to compete with a giant that simply offers more and has a much stronger marketing campaign.

Which one would you pick?
