Will 2014 be a good year for RPG fans? Well, it definitely looks promising enough. There are many titles coming out this year, from JRPGs to western RPGs and even games made based on some undying classics. Whether you’re a PC gamer or a console enthusiast, there will be plenty to choose from. Here are 10 RPG’s coming out this year that we are really looking forward to, for various reasons. No particular order of importance, mind you! Oh, and just to clarify, the omission of MMORPGs is intentional, those will be covered separately, as they represent a different genre in a sense. Let’s get to it!
[promo title=”Pillars of Eternity”][/promo]
It’s been a long, long time since we’ve had any RPGs made in the image of classics such as Baldur’s Gate or Planescape Torment. Obsidian’s Pillars of Eternity wants to appease gamers that are nostalgic of days long gone, and want to feel the atmosphere of a pen&paper based game once again. The game might not bring about any visual revolutions, but it certainly looks great for an isometric RPG. Pillars of Eternity has been exceedingly successful on kickstarter (generating almost 4 times the initially targeted amount). While it was originally set for a late-spring release, due to this success, Obsidian pushed the release date of Pillars of Eternity back to winter 2014. We don’t mind though, as they are making a bigger, better game. And we can’t wait to play it!
[promo title=”Dragon Age: Inquisition”][/promo]
Dragon Age 2 wasn’t a bad game, but it wasn’t particularly pleasing for Dragon Age: Origins fans either. It was an arguable flop in many way, and Bioware wants to patch things up. Inquisition is the 3rd title in the Dragon Age franchise, and it’s coming out this year. Why are we hyped? Well, the promise of a much larger and much more immersive world for one. And every single bit of information we’ve been fed (sparingly, truth be told) leads us to believe Dragon Age: Inquisition will be a much better game than its predecessor. A new story-line, with returning characters, in a gritty world that uses a new Frostbite engine? Yes please! A much longer development time, with no foreseeable rushed launch, as was the case with Dragon Age 2? Yes, plenty of reasons to make us count down the days till it arrives.
[promo title=”Lords of the Fallen”][/promo]
Lords of the Fallen promises to be a sort of next-gen Dark Souls, and in many aspects, it does look similar. And that can’t be a bad thing, considering how great of a game Dark Souls was. It’s not going to be an open-world sandbox RPG like Skyrim, but a certain degree of exploration will be possible, and players will be able to revisit old locations to unlock new ares. Players can use any type of gear and are not constrained by class restrictions. Boss fights are the center of the game, and each boss fight will be unique and dynamic (or so developers CI Games and Deck 13 promise us). Lords of the Fallen will come out late this year, on the PS4, Xbox One and PC.
[promo title=”The Witcher 3″][/promo]
Another truly next-gen title in the works, The Witcher 3 brings Geralt’s saga to a close. And while we’re sad to see an epic RPG franchise ending this year, we’re extremely excited to get to play the game. The Witcher 2 was an improvement over the first Witcher game, and there’s no reason The Witcher 3 won’t set standards even higher. Gameplay footage and screenshots show a gorgeous engine that will put consoles and PCs to their knees, as well as an open-world just waiting to be explored. Improved combat, horse-riding, a mature and gritty storyline…all these aspects make The Witcher 3 one of the most highly anticipated RPGs for 2014, and CD Projekt Red has quite the responsibility as such. Coming out this summer on the Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC, we’ll get to see if the game really will be as good as everyone is hoping.
[promo title=”X”][/promo]
That’s a simple name for a game, but don’t be fooled by the name, the game is anything but simple. Bringing a stunning open-world to the Wii U, Nintendo fans are in for a treat RPG-wise this year. Developed by Monolith Software, there’s great potential in X. A truly ambitions JRPG, X will cater to fans of Xenosaga or Xenoblade Chronicles. Huge monsters, mechs, fantasy elements combined with technology…a certainly interesting concept. X will most likely come out at the end of the year, and there’s not a lot of information about it, except for some great in-game footage. What we’ve seen so far though makes us hyped enough!
