Thief steals the spotlight with a new launch trailer

by GH Staff

Thief’s release is almost upon us. The Eidos Montreal produced and Square Enix published reboot of the Thief franchise will be released next week, on the 25th of February. To further prepare an already aggressive enough marketing campaign, the developers have released a new launch trailer for Thief, featuring gameplay elements and somewhat describing Garrett’s past and present condition. Based on what people are saying about the demo version of the game, the feelings about Thief are mixed so far. It’s still unclear whether this will be successful reboot (like last year’s Tomb Raider or the not-that-old Deus Ex: Human Revolution), or will be major disappointment to long-time fans of the series.

Truth be told, the trailer looks solid. The visuals are good, albeit not mind-blowing. The gameplay seems to be dynamic and gripping enough, but might not completely appeal to fans of the previous Thief games that want a hard-core stealth experience. And of course, one can’t help but wonder about the similarities between Dishonored and Garrett’s new adventure. Regardless, there’s no real point in debating the quality of Thief one week prior to its launch. For what it’s worth, it can surely take us by surprise (because that’s what Garrett does), and whether that will be a pleasant or unpleasant surprise remains to be seen.

I’ll set aside any press-related opinions I have come across during the last few weeks (there have been many, and very varied) and will keep an open mind until the game launches. I also suggest you do the same, and if it feels like something you’d really like to play, don’t be afraid to give the game a shot. We all have different expectations from Eidos’ powerhouse title of this year, and it’s unlikely that the game will cater to all needs and desires. That being said, know that Thief will be launching on both past-gen consoles Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, next-gen consoles Xbox One and Playstation 4, as well as the PC. Lastly, I’ll let you enjoy the new trailer and judge for yourself:
