Sorry folks, no praising the helix fossil in this one. Though perhaps Bird Jesus will be making an awaited return. And if you haven’t heard of the famed Twitch Plays Pokemon, you must not have been around for its popularity explosion earlier this year.
Taking the Internet by storm, Twitch Plays Pokemon is a channel on Twitch.tv that allows you to play cooperatively (or not so cooperatively) with tons of other people by typing a command into the chat. Creating quite the buzz, this little social experiment exploded earlier this year. People created paths, maps, and walk-throughs on Reddit and similar sites in an attempt to make completion a bit smoother. However it seems after the completion of Pokemon Red, quite a few have lost interest in playing. Perhaps this will change things?
Twitch Plays Pokemon X – Sorry, No Helix
July 27th, Twitch Plays Pokemon will be playing the fairly recent Pokemon X. But how is this possible? The 3DS isn’t exactly a streaming platform, and because the games are so recent, there is no existing emulator. Well, Twitch is using a modified 3DS to stream Pokemon X. The 3DS’ analog stick, touch screen, and all other aspects of game play will be controlled externally. This set-up was thought up by an enthusiast called dekuNukem. You can see how this will be working in the video below.
Because it is being played on an actual 3DS, this leaves all other features of the game still usable. Anything from Wonder Trade, O-Powers, and battling and trading others is still doable during the stream, which certainly will make things interesting.
This modified 3DS opens up Twitch Plays Pokemon to now be able to play any 3DS game. Twitch is currently streaming Animal Crossing: New Leaf until the Poke-Stream starts. Hopefully, this new set-up will even mean Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire will be making an appearance on the channel once they’ve been released. But for now, get ready for Pokemon X. And not to worry, the helix will live on, even if it’s not for this stream.
