A very dedicated fan known simply known as docalypse has began work on his own HD remake of the first Diablo, named Diablo: Original Sin. Using the engine from Divinity: Original Sin, his end-goal is to successfully remake 26 levels from Diablo and its expansion; Hellfire. Having only worked on it for 4 days, an impressive amount has already been done, including a remake of Tristram and its surrounding areas.
When it’s eventually released, players will be able to explore the dark and gritty dungeons with a party of 4 characters, all whilst listening to familiar music from Diablo and perhaps Diablo II. Gameplay will differ from the original, this time around players will engage in turn-based battles, making room for more tactical combat as opposed to just clicking away on the enemy relentlessly until they die.
There’s to be a ton of features, which can be seen on the reddit post, most notably new quests, traps, lock picking, and co-op gameplay. Whilst co-op would appeal to some, players are still able to control a full party by themselves if playing alone is preferred. Once the Divinity: Original Sin game engine allows more function, docalypse has said he’d like to add new magic schools, new enemies, new crafting recipes, and new hirelings “with their own story“.
A demo will be available once Tristram is completed alongside the 1st level of a dungeon. There’s no estimate for a release date, but Diablo: Original Sin will be available for both PC and Mac. Check out a portfolio of screenshots of the work done so far here.
