Lighting in modern video games has improved significantly over the years. But this takes it to a new level. Artist Koola has shared more of his work regarding lighting in the Unreal Engine 4. And the results are truly extraordinary.
More of his videos can be found in the link given above, but it’s safe to say we haven’t seen this level of lighting in any videogame to date.
So why do I call this “next”-gen? Well, nothing in the current generation of gaming has come close to what we’ve seen in these videos. Although the engine itself is current-gen, the lighting effects we see are not. The possibilities of lighting like this in games are infinite. Immediately I imagine games like The Forest utilizing this phenomenally.
Despite the possibilities, I shudder to think how long the video above took to render. So applying lighting effects like these in real-time probably won’t be happening until a couple of years time. So get ready to update your graphic cards.
We can also see a night to day cycle that Koola has posted to his channel:
Don’t be fooled, this isn’t real life, but I’m incredibly excited to see more of his videos, and to see what UE4 is truly capable of.
If you’re sick of the videos, there’s a thread here where Koola has posted some static images to go along with his videos. He also documents his progress here, so if you’d like to keep up with his latest developments, here’s the place to go (along with his Youtube channel above). Here’s a teaser of what you’re in for.

Again, this is not real life.
