Unreleased footage of cancelled Bonk game revealed

by GH Staff

You retro gamers out there might remember Bonk – the 1989 platformer originally released on the less than popular TurboGrafx-16. Players would take control of a caveboy in a 2D environment, taking on enemies from the prehistoric era – Bonk’s main attack would take advantage of his gigantic head, in which he would “bonk” enemies to death it seems. In 2009, a new Bonk game titled Bonk: Brink of Extinction was announced and was well into development – planned for release on the PlayStation Network, Xbox LIVE Arcade and WiiWare, the project was soon cancelled due to the game’s publisher Hudson merging with Konami in 2012, effectively closing any existing development.

A YouTube user known as Bonk Brink has uploaded a string of videos that appear to be gameplay of the cancelled game, showing off that all too familiar playstyle we’ve seen in previous series entries. The PS3 version is seemingly being played, in which you can see various power-ups being used such as the ability to freeze enemies and using the frozen obstacle to reach high up parts of the level. Brink of Extinction had online and co-op features planned but no further details ever emerged – from what we can see in the videos, the game had come a long way since the start of development and looked to be a promising retro reboot, unfortunately the chances of this becoming an actual release are next to impossible now. Check out the gameplay videos below.
