Development on the DayZ Standalone is going along nicely, with updates for the game rolling out on a weekly basis. We’ve seen great increases in weapon diversity over the last few weeks, and many of the game’s features are constantly being polished. But what’s in store for us in the upcoming months of February? Well, based on all evidence, even more weapons, extended mechanics for all those pesky tools we keep finding (like the hammer), improved weather system and most likely 80 player servers. Let’s look at some of the features in detail.
Where weapons are concerned, there have been small leaks here and there about an upcoming assault rifle. Rocket hinted that the next weapon in DayZ will be something similar to the M4A1, with an attachment system just as extensive. Well, that said assault rifle will be of course the AK 74, a versatile weapon that supports quite an array of modifications, and it’s simply a must for the east-European feel of Chernarus. In addition, Rocket explained that Chernarus is based on real life areas, and his goal is to capture the overall feel of Czechoslovakia. To do this, he will be focusing on adding more police-type weapons and items, and make military-grade arms rarer. The first step will be the introduction of the MP5 and MP5K SMG’s, which will definitely add to the growing diversity of weapons in the game.

The health system is also getting worked on extensively. The defibrillator will actually become useful, allowing players to bring unconscious allies back on their feet. It will not work on dead people, so this is not a Cleric’s resurrect. Heart attacks will also be introduced to DayZ in the nearby future, so try not to panic too much when you run into some pesky zombies or see a naked bloke with a clown-mask chasing you.

What else? Oh yeas, weather effects are getting tweaked a lot, and will actually influence gameplay. This is probably an indication that the devs are planning to bring back the Heat system of the DayZ Mod, where you could get sick and freeze without proper clothing and with prolonged exposure to cold and moisture.
Heat packs will most likely see a come-back, and we can expect the heat system to be much more extensive in the DayZ Standalone than the mod. Weather will also be more dynamical, and rain will surely add to the post-apocalyptic feel of the game.

Lastly, 80 and 100 player servers have already been added to the experimental branch of DayZ, and while the 100 player servers can get laggy on occasion, the 80 player ones seem to be running smoothly, and will most likely make it to stable soon enough. If you were hard-pressed to find a can of beans up until now, wait until you have to fend off a dozen hungry fresh-spawns with fists at the ready! Oh, and of course, here’s a teaser image of some of the other items coming into the game. We have one word for you: TENTS!
