Among the Sleep is a survival-horror game which has a very unique premise: you play as a toddler. Exploring a dark, spooky house in first-person, it’s a highly inventive stance on the tried-and-tested formulas Horror has gotten used to. Being a two-year-old child, there’s obviously no weapons involved – you have to literally crawl through the house defenceless, using only your wit to stay alive.
The truly terrifying thing about Among the Sleep is that you know how vulnerable you are – you’re not just without weapons, you’re actually physically unable to use them anyway. What happens within the shadowy house is anything but ordinary, as your environment will inevitably be shaped by your child-like imagination. Are these real monsters in this game, or are they the innocent misconceptions of a wandering baby?
Whatever the case, Among the Sleep has a very unique selling point, and it certainly looks disturbing from already released footage. Coming out for PC in Spring 2014, this game is sure to challenge your sanity.

Last on my list of most anticipated horror games for 2014 is Asylum. Created by the author and designer of the exceedingly scary Scratches game, Asylum is a project in the hands of people who are very passionate about psychological horror.
The game is set – you guessed it – in an abandoned mental asylum, and based on early gameplay footage, Asylum seems to have fantastic graphics and style. It’s yet another first person exploration adventure, with most of its unnerving content focussed upon atmosphere and psychological fear, rather than in-your-face spooks. The developers have named H.P.Lovecraft as one of their key inspirations for the project – and who could be better? Lovecraft Horror (or Weird Fiction) is known for its ‘fear of the unknown’ style of terror, preferring to keep monsters and demons in the shadows, lurking and sinister.
With its beautiful setting, top-notch team of developers and perfect figure of inspiration, Asylum is an underdog waiting to be recognised – and it surely will be in due time. The release date so far has only been stated as 2014, so expect more information soon.
There are plenty more Horror games coming out this year, but sadly, most are PC exclusive. Independent video-game makers are far more likely to take on the Horror genre at the moment, so next-gen consoles are probably going to have to wait longer for more Horror titles. Nevertheless, it’s going to be a great year for terror-lovers, and there’ll be plenty of ominous shadows and sanity-shattering whispers to keep you awake at night.
