Upcoming Ubisoft Games Pulled Off Steam, Added to Origin

by GH Staff

Upcoming Ubisoft games Assassin’s Creed: Unity, Far Cry 4, and The Crew were taken down from Steam yesterday, and appeared today on Origin. At first it had appeared that the triple-A holiday titles had been removed only from the UK Steam store, and Ubisoft made a statement regarding the takedown to PCgamesN:

“We’ve been in discussions with Valve about Assassin’s Creed Unity but for the time being the game is not available via Steam in the UK.

“In the meantime, UK customers wishing to purchase the game digitally can do so by visiting the Uplay store, our retail partners or other digital distributors.”

Soon however the games were taken down across Steam’s global network, and as of yet neither Valve or Ubisoft have made any sort of official statement regarding this decision. It is speculated that it had something to do with Ubisoft’s own Uplay DRM service, and that they wanted to charge more for their games than Steam allows on their service.

As of right now the older Ubisoft catalogue remains on Steam, and this is not the first time that Ubisoft has pulled games from Steam only to add them back again later. Presumably by moving their products to EA’s Origin, Ubisoft is attempting to send a message to Valve.

What do you make of this transition? Would you use Origin to download and play Ubisoft’s upcoming titles? Let us know in the comments.
