Video Game Releases for the Week of 10/06/2014

The craziness of October in video gaming is continuing this week with 15 games launching for the week of October 6, 2014. This week, I have my eyes on Alien: Isolation, Spelunky, Driveclub and Styx: Master of Shadows.

Note: All of the dates and prices listed below are for North American territories. Also, keep in mind that this list is subject to change with new games potentially announced or launching this week without notice.


 

Tuesday October 7, 2014:

  • Alien: Isolation

Platforms: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC

Prices: $59.99 for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 Versions, $49.99 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC Versions

Following the abomination that was Aliens: Colonial Marines, The Creative Assembly is promising an Alien experience that goes back and honors the classic tropes of Ridley Scott’s 1979 horror film with Alien: Isolation. Set 15 years after the events of the first movie, the player takes on the role of Amanda Ripley as she investigates the disappearance of her mother Ellen. While exploring the Xenomorph-infested Sevastopol space station, a lot of sneaking around and hiding will be required to successfully get through these nightmarish sequences.   • Costume Quest 2

Platform: PC (Digital Only)

Prices: $14.99 for Standard Version, $19.99 for Bundle Version

Costume Quest 2, the sequel to Double Fine’s hit original Costume Quest, is an RPG set during Halloween. The standard version of the game includes a copy of Costume Quest 2 and exclusive costumes from the original game, while the Bundle includes the original Costume Quest, the Grubbins on Ice DLC, Costume Quest 2, and original costumes. Though the game releases this week only on PC, it should launch on Xbox 360, PlayStation, 3, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Wii U later this year.

 

  • Divekick: Addition Edition

Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One (Releases on October 8, 2014) – (Digital Only on Both Platforms)

Price: $9.99

Divekick, the world’s first-ever two button Fighting game, is making its way to the new consoles as Divekick: Addition Edition, which features a massive balancing update. As simplistic as it looks, Divekick is an incredibly complex Fighting experience that involves a lot of strategy as a single hit to the head will knock you out.

 

  • Driveclub

Platform: PlayStation 4

Prices: $59.99 (Free if you are a PlayStation Plus Member and $49.99 if you want the Upgraded Version)

Driveclub is Sony’s new racing game that heavily revolves around its social features. It offers a lot of connectivity options resulting in many shared experiences with you and your friends. If you have a PlayStation Plus subscription, you’ll be able to access the PS Plus Edition of the game, which offers a sneak peak at what the full game has to offer with 11 tracks and 10 cars to try out. The full $60 version of the game includes 55 tracks, 50 cars and 50 tour events that are sure to please the PlayStation 4 owners who have been waiting for a next gen racing game.

 

  • Dust: An Elysian Tail

Platform: PlayStation 4 (Digital Only)

Price: $TBD (Free for PlayStation Plus Members in October)

Dust: An Elysian Tail is a side-scrolling Action RPG where you must search for Dust’s, the main protagonist, true identity inside a hand-painted world. With the mythical Blade of Ahrah and Fidget, Dust will go on an action-packed journey across snowy mountaintops and more.  If you are a PlayStation Plus member, then you are in luck because this title will be free for you throughout the entire month of October.

 

  • Jet Car Stunts

Platforms: PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita (Digital Only on Both Platforms and Cross Buy)

Price: $7.99

A brand new re-designed version of 2009’s iOS racing game is making its way to the PS3 and PS Vita this week as Jet Car Stunts. This hybrid between car and jet races offers great track design and the thrill of supersonic racing. Take note that a PlayStation 4 version of Jet Car Stunts will come later this year and will feature 1080p visuals and 60 frames per second.

 

  • Minecraft

Platform: PlayStation 4 (Retail Only)

Price: $19.99

While Minecraft is now a property of Microsoft, the game is still coming to PlayStation 4 at retail this week. If you haven’t had the chance to purchase the polygonal crafting simulator digitally last month, well now is your chance to acquire it in a shiny boxed disc version.

 

  • NBA 2K15

Platforms: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC

Price: $59.99

This year’s NBA 2K installment promises the same basketball gameplay you have come to love over the years. Featuring MyPLAYER, MyLEAGUE and Crew modes, NBA 2K15 is set to be the definitive basketball game this year. Plus, to top it all off, you’ll be able to listen to Pharrell Williams’ created soundtrack while shooting hoops.

 

  • Pix the Cat

Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita (Digital on Both Platforms and Cross Buy)

Price: $TBD (Free for PlayStation Plus Members in October)

Pix the Cat is a black and white arcade experience that is all about speed and combos. Additionally, PlayStation Plus members will be able to download the title for free during the entire month of October and is Cross Buy across PS4 and PS Vita.

 

  • Project Spark

Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC

Prices: Free, $39.99 for Starter Pack (Retail Only)

Project Spark is a platform that allows you to create games, movies, and other experiences with its digital canvas system. If creation isn’t your forte, you’ll also be able to download user-generated content and experience it for yourself. Though, at its core, the game is Free-to-Play, there is also a starter pack, only available at retail, that contains various packs to help you build your creations

 

  • Spelunky

Platform: PlayStation 4 (Digital Only and Cross Buy with PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita)

Price: $14.99 (Free For PlayStation Plus Members in October)

Spelunky fans: Rejoice! The indie rogue-like exploration platformer is coming to PlayStation 4, and will be free in October for all PlayStation Plus members. This version of Spelunky will feature 1080p visuals, new Daily Challenges and will support Cross Buy with the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita versions of the game.

 

  • Styx: Master of Shadows

Platforms: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC (Digital Only on All Platforms)

Prices: $29.99 for the Console Versions, $23.99 for PC Version (20% Pre-Purchase Discount)

In this infiltration game, you must guide Styx through the winding Tower of Akenash while avoiding a vast array of humans. You’ll also be able to customize Styx’s skills since the game contains RPG elements in it.

 

  • Tenkai Knights: Brave Battle

Platform: 3DS

Price: $29.99

Tenkai Knights: Brace Battle is a side-scrolling Fighting game where the player can build and customize his own robots. It is heavily inspired by the Tenkai Knights animated series.


Thursday October 9, 2014:

  • Final Fantasy XIII

Platform: PC (Digital Only)

Price: $13.99(10% Pre-Purchase Discount)

While the rest of the Final Fantasy XIII games will be making their way to PC later this spring, the first installment in the series will be released on the platform this week. If you did not get the chance to experience this RPG when it originally debuted on consoles, this is a great opportunity to do so.


 Friday October 10, 2014:

  • Ryse: Son of Rome

Platform: PC

Price: $39.99

The Xbox One launch title, Ryse: Son of Rome, is making its way to PC this week. It is essentially the same game as the console version, but you get to experience it on your computer now. Take note that, if you pre-order the game, you’ll receive the game’s soundtrack for free.
