As of today you can download the latest system update for the Wii U, which will add the quick start menu option, as well as a new notification system for the Wii U GamePad. With the new quick start menu, the Wii U gamepad will display the most frequently used software as soon as the power button is pressed on the GamePad. It should be noted that if the Wii U is powered up by a Wii remote or the power button on the system itself, the console will boot normally. The quick start menu is designed to allow the user to access their most used software immediately as the system starts up.
The second part of the update contains alert messages on the Wii U GamePad. The alert messages will appear via a ringtone on the GamePad when the Wii U system is powered down. Other small changes include adding the ability to download future updates while the Wii U is in standby mode. Of course, the update also includes “improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments.”
This update is all part of Nintendo’s overall plan to make the Wii U GamePad a more integral part of the Wii U experience, as they try to push the idea of playing games without the use of the television. Of course Nintendo wants to push the use of the GamePad since it’s perhaps the most significant point to owning a Wii U.
The ability to play console quality games and not require a television is something that the Wii U prides itself with, and it seems to be a feature that as of right now, is very underrated and unappreciated. What do you think? Tell us in the comments if you think Nintendo needs to try harder to push the use of the Wii U GamePad, and what they can do to improve its performance for gamers.
