Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition is available now on PS5, one year after the original game launched. To mark the Complete Edition launch and the game’s first anniversary, PlayStation Blog welcomed back Erika Ishii, the voice of Atsu, for an interview. The interview is condensed for clarity and brevity, and the full chat is available on the latest episode of the PlayStation Podcast.
GamerHeadlines previously reported the Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition announcement. The Complete Edition brings together the story campaign, the Ghost of Yōtei Legends multiplayer mode, and two new major additions: the roguelike mode Most Wanted and the narrative expansion Echoes of Sekigahara.
What the Complete Edition Adds
The story is split between the present day and flashbacks to Atsu’s time on the mainland. The flashbacks cover two periods of Atsu’s life.
Most Wanted has new dialogue and is non-canonical, with a slightly different, more mystical feeling. Jin, the protagonist of Ghost of Tsushima, returns in Most Wanted, and Ishii said Daisaku Tsuji recorded new voice lines for the mode.
Returning to Atsu and Echoes of Sekigahara
Between recording her last dialogue for the main story and returning for the expansion, there were at least a couple of months. Ishii played the finished game during production, which let her return to the character more easily than using reference audio.
Ishii said she had a list of pitches for the team, which they did not use. At the launch party she spoke with Courtney Woods, the writer for Echoes of Sekigahara, about Atsu needing romance in her life.
Ishii used a prior-moment acting technique to switch between those periods.
Ishii on Atsu and the First Anniversary
Ishii said playing The Last of Us made her want to act in games. She traveled to Tokyo Game Show, and a professional cosplay of Atsu was made for her so she could be Atsu on the Sony PlayStation stage in Japan.
On the game’s first anniversary, Ishii said the big news is the Complete Edition. She did not know the launch date until the rest of the world did. The team had a betting pool, and she predicted the launch on the anniversary but was one day off.
Ishii said it has been four years of her life being Atsu’s face, movements, and voice.
