People Playground 1.28 restores Steam Workshop access for contraptions. The game still blocks its former code-based mod system, so Workshop reopening does not restore the old C# library.

Developer zooi posted the official reopening announcement on October 27, 2026, at 23:41 UTC. Version 1.28 also adds native Linux support and changes several building controls. A Lua-based replacement is in development, but it is not included in the reopened Workshop.

What 1.28 allows

Feature Status in the official announcement What players should expect
Workshop contraptions Workshop access has returned for contraptions A construction can still depend on content that is no longer available
C# mods The current game prevents loading mods or C# code Old subscriptions do not restore code-based mod support
Lua mod loader The developer says implementation and testing remain The developer estimates at least two months; no release date is promised
Native Linux build Included in 1.28; testing was mainly on Debian Other distributions and handheld setups are not individually guaranteed

A Workshop page loading successfully does not prove that every older contraption will work. Check whether a contraption uses objects supplied by a removed mod before treating missing pieces as a new 1.28 bug.

Why the old mod system remains disabled

In the reopening post, zooi says the earlier C# system is permanently disabled and a Lua replacement is being prepared. The developer estimates at least two months to implement and test it. That estimate is not a confirmed launch window; wait for a separate availability announcement before expecting scripting support.

The developer also warns against third-party loaders and older game versions used to restore removed features. Those routes bypass the safeguards described for the current build. The announcement does not certify unofficial loaders or downgraded versions as safe.

Before loading an old contraption

  1. Update the game through Steam so you are checking the 1.28 behavior.
  2. If a contraption fails, check whether it requires a mod that is no longer available.
  3. Avoid third-party loaders or downgrades offered as a route back to C# support.
  4. If you were affected by the September incident, follow the developer’s separate incident guidance; the reopening announcement is not an account-recovery procedure.

Zooi also asks players to report Workshop uploads labeled “My Data” and not to open or download them because they contain personal information. Report the item through Steam instead of circulating a copy.

Other changes in 1.28

Studio Minus’s 1.28 changelog lists a railgun, beam repeater, and new construction controls. Press R to flip a selection; placed tools can be hidden with a keybind or button toggle; and the default deletion key is now X instead of Backspace. Check the changed keybind before editing a familiar scene.

The update also adds native Linux support. Testing was mainly on Debian, according to the announcement. GamerHeadlines’ separate SteamOS 3.9.5 coverage covers a different Steam Deck update; it does not establish compatibility for every People Playground Linux setup.

People Playground 1.28 FAQ

Can I use Workshop contraptions now?

The developer says Workshop access has returned for contraptions. A creation that depended on removed mod content may still be incomplete.

Are C# mods back?

No. The 1.28 announcement says the current build prevents loading mods or C# code, and the old mod system is permanently disabled.

Is the Lua loader available in 1.28?

No. The replacement needs implementation and testing, and the developer has not announced a release date.

Is the Linux build tested on every distribution?

The announcement says testing was mainly on Debian. It does not promise equivalent testing across all distributions or handhelds.
