Shigeru Miyamoto hosted a surprise Nintendo’s Pikmin Day Direct, posted on October 31 rather than live streamed, to declare that, starting this year, November 1 is Pikmin Day and to detail Pikmin 4 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy. The Switch 2 edition launches November 12, 2026, and a free demo arrives November 2.

Why November 1 Is Pikmin Day

The calendar claim comes from the original Pikmin game, released on Nintendo GameCube in 2001. The Red, Blue and Yellow Pikmin made their debut there. Miyamoto explained the date logic directly: ‘If you imagine those three Pikmin as the number one, that makes November 1st… Pikmin Day.’ Nine types of Pikmin have been discovered so far. Nintendo has not said nine is a cap.

Pikmin debuted in 2001 and spent years as a cult series rather than a top-tier Nintendo property. A fixed calendar date, a celebrity ambassador in Japanese actress Fuka Koshiba, and a monthly animated short series made with Nintendo Pictures all point to long-term investment in a smaller brand. The 11.1 reasoning turns the three original Pikmin into a reusable marketing hook each November. The date gives Nintendo a permanent window to run promotions, demos, and media without waiting for a new game reveal.

Cross-platform availability supports that annual beat. All four mainline Pikmin games, from the first through Pikmin 4, are playable on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch. That removes the old barrier of needing legacy hardware to revisit the series on Pikmin Day.

Dandori Academy Turns Planning Into a Weekly Test

Pikmin 4 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy adds a new mode built around collecting treasure as quickly as possible. Stages task players with grabbing fruits and vegetables within a time limit. Dandori means efficient planning, and the scoring makes that the point.

Exams are held every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Each exam gives one attempt, so players have to practice before the weekend. Performance earns medals, and online leaderboards track results. Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for online features. Three difficulty levels are available, and Nintendo has said 72 Dandori Academy stages will be released over time.

The single-attempt format changes the failure state. A single Purple Pikmin can carry treasure that would normally take several Pikmin, and planning a path in advance can open a shortcut, so the best score comes from studying the stage and committing to a plan. The exam loop isolates treasure collection from the campaign’s full combat and exploration, which makes route efficiency the primary skill. Dandori Battles let players challenge friends locally through GameShare or online through GameChat, and those friends do not need to own the game. The Switch 2 edition also adds voice commands for Oatchi through the built-in microphone. Miyamoto demonstrated the commands ‘Oatchi, rush!’ and ‘Go to work!’

The Demo and the $9.99 Upgrade Path

A free demo launches November 2. It includes the opening Sun-Speckled Terrace area and two Dandori Academy stages. That gives players a chance to test the new mode, the voice commands, and the opening campaign before the November 12 launch. The demo follows the same try-before-you-buy pattern seen with the Monster Hunter Wilds Switch 2 prologue demo.

Existing Pikmin 4 owners can pre-order a $9.99 Upgrade Pack now instead of buying the full new edition. That catalog approach is also visible in Nintendo’s wider Switch 2 lineup, including Nintendo Switch Sports Resort. The eShop listing rates Pikmin 4 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy as Comic Mischief and Fantasy Violence.

Nintendo did not state whether demo progress carries into the full game. The two included Dandori Academy stages still give players a direct look at the scoring before they choose the $9.99 upgrade. The demo lets existing owners try the new mode, and the upgrade moves them to the Switch 2 edition without buying the game twice.

Pikmin Bloom and Hello! Pikmin Extend the Date

Pikmin Bloom’s Secret Caves update is scheduled for this winter. Players need cave maps to enter, and those maps may be attached to postcards. After obtaining a map, players can send out a bunch of Pikmin at once to explore. Creature battles use the whistle to recall Pikmin, and Pikmin that take too much damage withdraw and recover after a while. Treasure collected in caves becomes a new collection.

Special in-app cave maps can be earned by taking exams in Pikmin 4 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy. The two games are linked through those cave maps.

The Hello! Pikmin short movie series is being made with Nintendo Pictures and released on Nintendo Today! and other channels. The first short is ‘#01 Frog’, with another episode on November 1, one more during November, and monthly episodes from December onward. Japanese actress Fuka Koshiba was introduced as a Pikmin ambassador to help build excitement, following last year’s ‘Pikmin Close to you’ short.
