Mojang has released Minecraft on Nintendo Switch 2, bringing the Vibrant Visuals upgrade and the Nintendo-exclusive Super Mario Mash-Up Pack to the console on October 27, 2026. The release, detailed in the official announcement, is available through three digital editions and a physical Standard Edition at retail. Existing Nintendo Switch players can carry their worlds forward, and digital owners in most regions can claim a free upgrade to the Switch 2 Standard Edition during the launch window.
Vibrant Visuals changes the look of the Nintendo Switch 2 edition
The Nintendo Switch 2 edition includes Vibrant Visuals as its headline visual change. Mojang says the upgrade adds directional lighting, volumetric fog, dynamic shadows, and more. The result is a more atmospheric version of the same Minecraft world, with light and shadow rendered in ways the original Nintendo Switch version does not provide. Vibrant Visuals is included in the Nintendo Switch 2 edition; there is no separate visual mode purchase.
Marketplace support is part of the package. Players can enjoy all Vibrant Visuals-supported content on the Minecraft Marketplace, so existing DLC updated for the feature can use the new lighting and effects beyond the base game. The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack is a flagship example, but other supported DLC can also use the visual mode. The visual upgrade is not applied in every gameplay situation: Vibrant Visuals is not available in some gameplay, including split-screen and when using certain Marketplace Worlds and content.
Super Mario Mash-Up Pack gets a Vibrant Visuals update
The Nintendo-exclusive Super Mario Mash-Up Pack is included in the Nintendo Switch 2 edition and has been updated to make use of Vibrant Visuals. The pack lets players explore iconic locations from the world of Mario, includes 15 tracks, and adds 40 player skins inspired by the Super Mario series.
To use the pack, players head to the Marketplace to claim the DLC and start a new world. Every Nintendo Switch 2 edition includes the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack.
Three digital editions and a physical Standard Edition
Mojang is selling the Nintendo Switch 2 version as a digital Standard Edition, Deluxe Collection, and Ultimate Collection. All three include the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack. The Deluxe Collection and Ultimate Collection add extra content such as add-ons and Minecoins, while the Standard Edition is the baseline path to the Nintendo Switch 2 edition. A physical Minecraft Standard Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 is also available at retail.
The announcement does not specify the exact add-on names or Minecoin totals in each collection. Minecoin use remains tied to the Nintendo platform on this release. Included Minecoins and any Minecoins purchased in Minecraft on a Nintendo Switch device must be used in the Nintendo ecosystem.
Upgrade path runs through January 31, 2027
The upgrade offer runs from October 27, 2026 at 9AM PT through January 31, 2027 at 9AM PT. Players who already own a digital copy of Minecraft for Nintendo Switch can upgrade to the digital Minecraft Standard Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 for free in most regions. They can also upgrade to the Deluxe Collection or Ultimate Collection at a discount, with the discounted offers available through Nintendo eShop only.
The free Standard Edition upgrade applies in all territories except Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand, where it costs 100 JPY, 30 NTD, and 25 THB respectively. Those regional prices cover the standard digital edition, while the Deluxe and Ultimate discounts remain available through the eShop.
Physical owners are included in a different way. During the offer period, any player who launches Minecraft for Nintendo Switch on their Nintendo Switch 2 will receive an in-game message inviting them to upgrade to the digital Minecraft Ultimate Collection for Nintendo Switch 2 at a discount through the link in that message. The in-game route targets the Ultimate Collection.
Only digital owners can get the free Standard Edition; physical owners see an in-game message pointing them to a discounted digital Ultimate Collection. Players who want the new physical Standard Edition can buy it at retail, but the announcement does not describe a separate physical upgrade discount.
What the Nintendo Switch 2 edition changes for existing players
The Nintendo Switch 2 can play the original Nintendo Switch version of Minecraft through backward compatibility, but that version does not gain the Nintendo Switch 2 edition’s rendering changes. Players who move to the Nintendo Switch 2 edition get Vibrant Visuals, while their Nintendo Switch worlds carry over so they can pick up right where they left off and play anywhere. That continuity reduces the practical risk of moving to the new console generation.
The economics favor digital owners during the upgrade window. A free path to the digital Standard Edition in most regions keeps the baseline move inexpensive, while the Deluxe and Ultimate discounts offer a paid route to add-ons and Minecoins through the Nintendo eShop. Physical owners get an in-game discount message focused on the Ultimate Collection.
Vibrant Visuals is available only in compatible single-player and supported Marketplace scenes; split-screen and some Marketplace content run without the upgrade. That limitation sits alongside the regional pricing exceptions and the eShop-only delivery for the discounted upgrades.
Cross-generation carry-over lets players keep existing builds and progress. This launch adds a visual and content layer to the same world data. Earlier this year a Minecraft update finally added an official sitting feature, and the Nintendo Switch 2 edition carries those same worlds forward so they can use the new visual mode wherever it is supported.
Carrying over a Nintendo Switch world does not mean every part of that world will always display Vibrant Visuals. The feature is unavailable in split-screen and in some Marketplace Worlds and content, so existing worlds may alternate between the upgraded look and the standard visual mode depending on the situation. Save data carries forward even when Vibrant Visuals is inactive in some scenes.
Mojang raised Minecraft Java requirements this year; the Switch 2 standard edition upgrade is free in most regions. Players deciding between editions should weigh add-ons and Minecoins, since the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack is present in every edition.
