343 Industries head Bonnie Ross has given some plot details about Halo 5: Guardians, stating that they don’t aim to kill off characters as much as they used to in previous entries of Halo. In a lengthy interview with Eurogamer, Ross outlined several aspects of Halo 5 and brought up a comparison to the popular TV show ‘Game of Thrones’.

“We also had a tendency to kill all of our characters besides Master Chief. We are not Game of Thrones, and we actually want to make sure going forward we have a larger cast of characters with which to tell stories.

Stories need to stand alone, whether they’re books, in the game, different animation and live action. The game has to stand alone and each of the stories has to stand alone. They are better together, but we’re never making fans do the homework to make sure they understand all of these.”

This statement makes it clear that Halo 5 is going for a much richer, character-driven plot that doesn’t rely on character deaths to move the plot forward. Within the Halo series, both the main games and spin-offs, interesting characters tend to die either during the events of the game or at the end. With Halo 5, 343 is trying to keep characters intact and create a story that explains itself well within its campaign. We’ll get to know more about Master Chief’s new journey when Halo 5: Guardians launches in 2015 for Xbox One.
