The Last Tinker: City Of Colors previously debuted on PC, but has now gracefully leaped onto the PlayStation 4 platform exclusively.

The game itself tells the story of Koru, a monkey who lives in a city of colors which at first seems adorable but soon turns cold. The game offers a linear yet fun experience. The game is split into evenly paced levels that offer a variety of things to do. Helping villagers, collecting paint brushes and puzzles are all present in this wonderful platforming adventure.

The controls are a breeze making it easy for children to play as well as us core gamers. There is even a mode, especially for “kids”.

The game looks great with its unique art style and vibrant color scheme, its personality stands out in the variety of strange yet wonderful looking landscapes and townsfolk which make the game fun and interesting to explore.

Exploring is limited though, as its level design is somewhat muddled and as mentioned above linear. Obstacles in the game are traversed mainly by using a single button which will automatically have Koru leap onto a ledge or jump over a crevice. The mechanic works ok at first, but once you get deeper into the story and the levels become slightly more compact, it is then that the mechanic fails and I often found myself falling off of ledges rather than jumping over them. Puzzles, well they come in the form of sneaking past watchful eyes or taking the right path, these are simple but still offer a challenge. For the most part the game runs well however The Last Tinker: City Of Colors has a framerate issue that dampens the overall experience and feel, especially whilst traversing the various levels.

Putting the framerate issue and flaws aside, The Last Tinker: City Of Colors is still a beautiful little game that offers a neat story, a fresh experience compared with core releases and a slightly different take on the platforming genre. It offers an almost open world like experience that games such as Jak and Daxter and Crash Bandicoot have in the past except there is much more to do and see. The narrative text suits the game well, voice acting would have been preferred for me, but I’m not sure it would have added much to The Last Tinker: City Of Colors overall aesthetic.

Sadly The Last Tinker: City Of Colors is solely a single player experience, there are no multiplayer or Co op levels. Loading times are also slightly lengthy These minor issues don’t deter from the experience, though, as The Last Tinker: City Of Colors was clearly made to be played alone. The game draws you in nicely with its enjoyable and simple format. It’s easy to follow storyline and its quirky characteristics. The game is enjoyable to play and easy to follow. It’s something that should be played by everyone who loves quirky indie titles.

Overall, it is worth the purchase and will keep you entertained for a few hours at most, but if you’re not into cutesy addictive games that seep originality then I would give it a miss!
