Prime Video is turning the Fallout universe into a reality competition. On Fallout Day, October 23, the streamer announced Fallout Shelter: The Experiment, an unscripted series that drops everyday contestants into Vault-Tec’s bomb-proof vault shelters and puts a $1,000,000 prize on the line. The competition premieres Wednesday, January 13, 2027, exclusively on Prime Video.

The Amazon MGM Studios press release lays out the shape of the season: ten episodes, with the first four arriving January 13 and three more each week through January 27. Contestants will work through what the announcement calls “high-octane drills, psychological dilemmas and morally challenging behavior trials” until “one special dweller” wins the prize. The series will stream in more than 240 countries and territories.

Contestants become vault dwellers

Fallout Shelter is the name of Bethesda’s vault-management mobile game, which the press release counts at more than 230 million downloads, and the series borrows its vocabulary wholesale. Contestants are “dwellers,” their arena is Vault-Tec’s “state-of-the-art bomb-proof vault shelters,” and the prize goes to whoever proves the best “aptitude for the apocalypse.” The show adapts the franchise’s framing device rather than the RPG’s story or characters: an ordinary person sealed into a Vault and asked to survive.

That device sits on top of a familiar competition structure. The three challenge types named in the announcement map to three kinds of pressure: physical drills, psychological dilemmas, and moral trials. A contestant has to last through all three to reach the money, an endurance format that Bethesda’s own Fallout Day celebrations have spent a week framing around community and survival.

Studio Lambert, founded in 2008 by Stephen Lambert, is the London-and-LA company behind The Traitors, which has won fifteen Emmy Awards, and Squid Game: The Challenge, the Netflix adaptation of a scripted hit into a real-money elimination game. Both shows take a known fictional world, keep its iconography, and run ordinary people through it.

Kilter Films brings the franchise connection. Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan’s company developed the scripted Fallout drama with Bethesda Game Studios, and Nolan directed its first three episodes. The drama, starring Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Walton Goggins, and Kyle MacLachlan, pulled in 17 Emmy nominations in its first season and passed 100 million viewers across its first two seasons by March 2026, which Prime Video calls one of its most-watched series ever. That is the audience base this competition is meant to inherit. Kilter Films also made Westworld and is separately developing a live-action Wolfenstein series with MachineGames, so Fallout is one node in a broader Bethesda-to-television pipeline.

Bethesda Game Studios, founded in 2001, built The Elder Scrolls and Fallout series, and it is attached here in association. Its executive producer credits include Todd Howard, the studio’s longtime game director and public face, alongside James Altman. Howard’s credit indicates the game studio approved the format.

Where the show fits in Fallout’s TV calendar

The announcement landed on Fallout Day, and the premiere slots into a deliberate gap. The scripted drama’s second season ran from December 17, 2025, and its third season is currently in production, which means January 2027 would otherwise be quiet for the franchise on Prime Video. A ten-episode competition series with a three-week rollout fills that window and keeps the Fallout brand running on the service between drama seasons.

Four episodes drop on January 13, then three a week for two weeks. That pattern keeps the show in the conversation for the full month rather than front-loading the whole season.

What is still not confirmed

The press release leaves several production questions open. There is no host named, no contestant casting, and no word on episode length or any structure beyond the ten-episode total. The prize is stated as $1,000,000 to the winner, but the announcement does not describe a secondary prize pool or how elimination is staged week to week.

Bethesda Game Studios, credited in association with the project, is the studio behind Fallout 5 and the series’ next entries, and its involvement in a competition format marks a different kind of license extension than the mainline games. Amazon has not yet described how the weekly eliminations work.
