Pix The Cat Review

Pix The Cat is a colorful title, it is very much like PAC-MAN when it comes to gameplay, however it does have originality and is very unique in its own way. You play as Pix a cat whose task is simply to collect eggs that turn into ducklings and drop them off in designated areas in order to score varying amounts of points. The object is to score as many points as possible in whatever mode you are playing.

Game modes consist of a marathon style gameplay, a multiplayer face off and a few others. Each of these modes is challenging, fun and frustrating all at the same time. They all require you to use speed when pressing buttons as well as using your head in order to strategise the best route. Taking the wrong route could cause you to crash into your lovely trail of ducklings or you could drop a duckling off before you’ve collected all around that level again ending in a combo break. If you collect the eggs first and then drop them off you can maximize the amount of points earned.

All of the modes are timed too, so you have to act fast, memory is key as you will be doing the levels over and over again. The game’s soundtrack is excellent, it fits the game perfectly adding to the overall experience. Visually Pix The Cat is eye pleasing, a colorful and vivid level design with strobe light like effects bursting out of the seams of every object and wall. It really does look quite stunning much like PAC-MAN did back in the day.

Story wise the game is empty, but the games sheer fun will keep you entertained and I often wanted to keep retrying in order to beat my previous score. All of the levels are loaded already too, each level seamlessly moves onto the next as you travel through. Cleverly enough, you can even see the next level before you enter it and you can go back and forth between levels which is pretty cool.

Some levels are miniature, Pix ends up being tiny in order to squeeze through these particular level designs. As you progress you will also encounter enemies. Progression is tough, though, especially during the marathon mode as you only have 3 minutes to get as far as you can.

Overall Pix The Cat is an awesome title, there are only a few things that let the game down. The absent story, no way of keeping you truly hooked other than trying over again and the fact that the game never really explains much. The game is repetitive too, but this is the route its trying to take.

Chasing the combo is fun, especially when you reach fever time, the music gets faster and so does Pix making the gameplay even more engaging. Pix The Cat is available now on PSN and its free for those with a PS Plus subscription so if you‘re interested go and pick it up now!
