Now before I start this review I must note that this game is highly addictive!

Now we have that out of the way, let’s give you guys some info. So Teslagrad is available on various platforms from the PC to PlayStation 4. It is a 2D platform/ puzzle game that has a significantly unique art style. The game puts you in the shoes of a young boy that initially sets out in the midst of a rain storm for a completely unknown reason. He also gets chased by various men in red coats and his only option is to run away.

What makes Teslagrad interesting is that it is up to you to find the story, there is no narrative throughout and the only real insight you get from time to time is through minature, wordless shows that play at various theatres dotted around in the game. So the questions you will certainly ask yourself are those only you can answer by progressing through this epic adventure.

Visually Teslagrad is stunning, not stunning as in a graphical achievement, but stunning as in an absolutely fantastic looking game. The art style is like no other and the way animations play out are both beautiful and awe inspiring. Sound is also superb, the soundtrack used is sublime to say the least.

Teslagrad is like no other 2D game I have played before, it offered me tools and sent me on my journey in order to find out why I ended up on such a treacherous adventure. Puzzles plague the game, but in an orderly fashion so while in one moment I may be simply enjoying the soundtrack and the surroundings only to come across a puzzle that I must figure out. Absolutely nothing is given to you, so you must use your knowledge of the tools provided in order to execute the solution.

Enemies are also present not just in the form of men in red coats, but also in various other forms. Puzzles later in the game also have various obstacles that must be passed in a certain way otherwise death is inevitable. Luckily the games checkpoint system is pretty decent and you will only end up at the start of the puzzle you failed.

Teslagrad’s main issue is that it sometimes needs you, the player to be ultra precise. Puzzles have a clear solution, however, these puzzles are truly tough to navigate as timings have to be so precise. There are also various bosses in the game that bring back the old school mechanics of hitting them 3 times in order to destroy them. They hit you once and your dead and sadly have to start the battle over. I liked these moments of classic nostalgia, but it would be foolish of me to say the fights were easy as they were anything but.

Collectible scrolls are discoverable throughout Teslagrads various levels. Alot of them are hard to get to, some of them are hidden behind puzzles, whereas others are in plain sight. Finding all 36 of these on PlayStation 4 is certainly a challenge, but getting these scrolls are a must as they unlock trophies.

Teslagrad is an absolutely excellent title. One of which I am extremely fond of, I would recommend those who haven’t played it to pick it up right now, but due to the nature of this title it may only be fit for those actually interested. If you like old school style games with unique visuals and compelling gameplay then pick this up. If you’re unsure check out some gameplay videos!

On a final note, upon checking the trophies available on the PlayStation 4, it would suggest this title may be coming to PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 3 sometime soon!
