Yet another big leak has occurred before E3, this time for a different triple A series. This year’s Battlefield installment will be called Battlefield: Hardline, a police themed game that features a totally different campaign and multiplayer to other Battlefield games. This will be the first Battlefield spin-off in a while since Battlefield: Bad Company and the divergent gameplay is sure to mix things up. Also, this game is being developed by Visceral Games, the studio behind the survival horror series Dead Space, making this the 2nd studio to work on a Battlefield game aside from DICE.
A trailer was leaked for the game, which revealed info on the story, characters and multiplayer modes. The video has since been taken down but the details still remain. The gameplay from the trailer ran on a PS4 utilizing the Frostbite 3 engine that Battlefield has become well known for using. The campaign is entitled ‘Omaha’ and will be based on a Miami cop named Nick Mendoza taking on crime within the city and encountering police corruption and criminal undergrounds. The story is very similar to cop dramas and movies that we’ve all seen before, so it will be interesting to see how Battlefield handles this concept. The gameplay map will be large and open, promoting multiple playthroughs using different methods. Aside from a wide assortment of weapons, you will also be able to use gadgets that give the game an investigation aspect and will let you decide how to play through a level: guns blazing or with stealth.
The multiplayer mode is divided into several categories, each based on the theme of cops and criminals. The mode ‘Heist’ mode involves a team of robbers attempting to steal from a bank whilst a team of cops has to try and stop them. The ‘Rescue’ mode puts you in the role of a police team sent in to rescue hostages. The ‘Hotwire’ mode features dynamic car chases across big maps, the likes of which we’ve seen in Battlefield before. The ‘Bloodmoney’ mode has both the cops and criminals fighting to obtain a large sum of money in a bank vault. Destruction will once again be a large part of the game, as is standard in Battlefield games, and Levolution will be making a return from Battlefield 4. You’ll be able to use a big variety of vehicles as usual, including police cars, muscle cars, attack helicopters and more.
EA has not confirmed any solid information regarding Hardline, but we’ll likely find out more at E3, which isn’t too far off now. Battlefield games usually release in November, so it would be no surprise if that is the release window. This game is also expected to release for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
