Bungie’s new multiplayer shooter Destiny is clearly a giant game. Gamers logged dozens of hours on the Beta alone and that was only one destination. According to Bungie’s community manager David Dague, the full version of Destiny is so big that you are unlikely to ever “finish” the game. When asked how many hours gamers can expect from the upcoming Space MMO epic, Dague didn’t give a specific answer but instead stated that Destiny can basically never be completed.
“If you’re a speed-runner, and all you want to do is blaze through and complete one story mission after one story mission, you’re really just scratching the surface” – Dague
Beyond Earth, players will get to visit many other destinations like Mars, Venus, and even the Moon, all having ancient civilizations and unique terrain to explore. We’re guessing that the $500,000,000+ budget Activision has given this thing is going to pay off as it almost already did in just the beta. The game undeniably looks great (possibly the best I’ve personally ever seen) but it’s the truly gigantic exploration Destiny offers that is grabbing gamer’s attention. With that exploration apparently comes an equal sized amount of things to do in the game. David Dague has stated that you can do things from just enjoying your personal vehicle in “expansive outdoor locations” to picking through “bones of our shattered civilization” in “dungeon-type spaces”.
Even if you manage to explore every single 3D rendered inch of the game, you still aren’t done, according to the developers. “Until you’ve kicked every single ass that plays this game, you haven’t finished. And once you have, someone else just bought their first copy. So, fresh meat, Christmas noobs” says Dague. Bungie has been making a long term plan for Destiny so that it can change with the times and become almost more of a community than a game, like WoW has. Dague claims “this is a game that we’ll be able to support a lot more aggressively than anything we’ve ever had out before” which says to me that they have plans on adding a lot into the game post-release as many gamers have speculated. Let’s cross our fingers and hope that most of that theoretical added content will be free in updates, Minecraft style.
I’m not sure what he means by not completing the game until you’ve kicked every ass that plays but I’m guessing that maybe has something to do with unique bonuses you get for eliminating different players. However, that’s just a guess. I don’t think he would just say that if there wasn’t more meaning behind it though. Because with that logic, you could technically say you can never beat Halo, Call of Duty, or Battlefield, and that simply isn’t true. I’m hoping that Destiny offers a new interesting reward system for defeating other players that we haven’t seen in any other game before. May be wishful thinking, but I feel like thats what Dague was hinting towards.
In any case, Destiny is clearly massive and players everywhere can’t wait to pick up their controllers and explore this sci-fi dystopian futuristic world come September 9th. I know you all have your pre-orders ready and are counting the days down to the release of this unfinishable game (yes, I just made up a word). But remember… When you think you’ve beaten it, someone else just bought their first copy. Fresh meat, Christmas noobs.
