Mafia III has been rumored to be in development for over two years and was originally supposed to be a Playstation 4 and Xbox One launch day title. This alleged game would be the follow up to the popular sequel Mafia II, which sold over three million copies worldwide. But even with those sales, the game received average reviews at best: the average Metacritic score was a 75. While Mafia II had a great story, the linear gameplay left much to be desired.
Since the initial reports, 2K Czech, the developer of the previous two entries, has suffered from layoffs and a massive studio restructuring. Now again, there has only been speculation about the unconfirmed Mafia III; but since Eurogamer broke the story about the supposed development, most assume that 2K Czech’s untitled game will be the third entry in the popular series.
Now, these dated speculations have returned with the recent casting call that was posted on ‘actors access.’ The post listed the Production company as Take Two and the product as an ‘Untitled Video Game.’ On top of this, the casting call is for three characters: Franklin who is “[in his] 20s, born in Louisiana, of mixed race…[and] fiercely loyal to those he considers family.” The actor portraying Franklin also needs to have a Louisiana accent. The second character Tony is “born in Louisiana, Italian, early 30s…[who] is not your typical gangster. [He is] meticulous and organized, [and] is more concerned about numbers and profit than people.” Last is Mickey, who is “born in Louisiana, Italian, and in [his] late teens or early 20s…[he is] a young street hustler who likes to run his mouth…but when push comes to shove he cannot back it up.” The casting call stresses that both Tony and Mickey need to have an Italian accent, but a light one considering their southern background. Furthermore, “the actors will be used for voiceovers, motion capture, and their likeness will be placed in the game.”
Now this leads to the obvious speculation that the game will be set in Louisiana: the hope is for New Orleans. But again, there has not been an official game announcement, so the setting of Mafia III is not going to be announced for awhile. The much more interesting aspect is that the casting call is for three characters; and how in March 2012, 2K Czech was rumored to have been working on Grand Theft Auto V with Rockstar. However, this was only a rumor and it was supposedly debunked by a 2K representative. With this said, could Mafia III have three main characters like Grand Theft Auto V or is the casting call for a main character and two important supporting roles? Again, there is not enough information to answer these questions; who knows this could be the casting call for another crime-genre game. But being that this is 2K Czech and the consistent rumors about Mafia III for over two years, one has to assume that this game’s announcement will be soon.
