As part of Microsoft’s ongoing Games with Gold promotion, those subscribed to Xbox LIVE Gold are able to download the sidescrolling horror Deadlight at no cost at all. Players take control of park ranger Randall Wayne – a survivor of a virus that seemingly brings the dead back to life. It is Randall’s mission to locate his missing wife and young daughter, however with hordes of zombies as well as militia groups populating the now destroyed world, this comes with a fair amount of challenges along the way.
The gameplay promotes 2.5D side-scrolling action with an emphasis of simply staying alive, guns and ammo are a rare find, so it’s advised to not purposely engage in zombie encounters unless it’s absolutely needed. Survival is the key in Deadlight – sometimes it’s better to avoid the risk of being bitten by flesh-eating undead.
Since the Games with Gold scheme launched in June 2013, numerous titles have been offered to users, both retail and arcade. These include the likes of Fable III, Dead Island, Toy Soldiers: Cold War, Halo 3, and many more Whilst the promotion is currently only available on Xbox 360, Microsoft have said the service will be heading towards Xbox One sometime in 2014 – no specific date has yet been set.
