As I’m sure most if not all of you area aware, the beta for Destiny was just recently made live. While many are already rolling into action, shooting away on various planets in different areas, a few last-gen console users may be wishing they can gun down their friends who have next-gen consoles. So why doesn’t Destiny allow Ps3 + Ps4 and Xbox 360 + Xbox One users to play together? Well, they say it’s to stop you from raging over the game.
Destiny, No Cross-Platform Multiplayer for Your Own Good
When it comes to FPS, everything from console power to Internet connection really counts. Even the most “MLG” players can be smeared all over the walls due to the dreaded lag and differences in platform alike. Engineer Rodger Wolfson told Digital Trends, a difference of a pixel or two can make a world of difference in shooting. If Destiny was released on last-gen consoles, those with next-gen consoles would have an advantage, even if it’s just a pixel or two.
Wolfson’s example makes sense. Say you last-gen console user see your next-gen console user buddy across the map. You’re both gunning to win a sniper battle between the two of you. Your buddy sees you as 4 pixels, while you’re only seeing 2. For your buddy, it’s easier to line up and take a shot on you. Something as simple as this can start to make game play a bit unfair.
Wolfson and the team don’t want an unfair experience. They want a level ground for each gamer to experience the game in the same way, no matter the platform.
While you may have been looking forward to shooting your friends in the Destiny beta, this consideration from the devs by separating the play between platforms may save you from the world of rage. It will also improve your playing experience. So, enjoy the experience Bungie has created for you, and gear up for the full release Sept. 9th!
