It appears as though EA and BioWare’s upcoming open-world, role-playing game, Dragon Age: Inquisition, will not be released in India.

Reportedly, EA has cancelled all existing pre-orders for the highly anticipated video game in India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan due to the inclusion of an “openly gay,” homosexual male character who plays an important role in the game.

Furthermore, the presumed main reason for Dragon Age: Inquisition‘s cancellation in India is the fact that players can choose to engage in a romantic, sexual relationship with the aforementioned gay male, but only if they are playing as another male character.

According to DNAIndia.com, a statement regarding the matter said the following:

“In order to avoid a breach of local content laws, EA has withdrawn Dragon Age: Inquisition from sale in India and the game is no longer available for pre-order. All affected purchases for Dragon Age: Inquisition will be refunded. This applies regardless of payment method or date of purchase. Customers who pre-ordered the game will be contacted directly and will be fully refunded.”

Additionally, India’s distributor of EA and BioWare games’ website site states:

“Rather than face the wrath of some of India’s more prudish segments of society, EA has pre-emptively decided to make the game unavailable in India, without confirming or commenting on which local laws were being breached.”

Regional marketing director for EA, Simon Smith-Wright said:

“The current action we’ve taken only affects Dragon Age Inquisition.”

The sudden cancellation of Dragon Age: Inquisition from India, in addition to being a major disappointment for gamers in the Indian market, is quite intriguing – especially since other EA/BioWare games that also include gay characters or homosexual relationships such as the previous 2 Dragon Age games and the Mass Effect series were available in India and surrounding territories at launch.

This article will be updated if, or when, pertinent information emerges.
