Far Cry 4 dev says 1080p resolution doesn’t sell games, experiences do

According to a recent TotalXbox interview with Far Cry 4’s creative director, Alex Hutchinson, 1080p resolution isn’t a selling point for modern video games, stating the following in regards to the ever-present question – “1080p or not 1080p?”:

“It’s certainly not something I care about in a game. It feels weird to me that people are cool about playing a sort of retro pixel game, and yet the resolution somehow matters. It’s like: is it fun, is it interesting, is it new, is it fresh, are there interesting questions?

Hutchinson went on to imply his belief that the majority of consumers’ proclivity towards high graphical fidelity visuals is not as prominent as it once was, similar to the laments of Crytek’s Nicolas Schulz who, earlier this October, stated that flashy visuals are not enough to impress potential customers anymore.

Alex Hutchinson believes that the era of gamers obsessing over graphical fidelity is over, saying, “…think about how things used to be – it used to be the graphics on the back of a box that sold a game. And even since the Xbox 360 and the PS3, that sort of era, like early 2000, I feel like 99% of the time it’s gone away.”

Instead, Hutchinson says that experiences are video games’ financial ace-in-the-hole:

“I think experiences have been selling them, and that’s your challenge, if you don’t have a new cool experience, or a social experience – like Call of Duty sells consoles, even though art-wise, it’s not exactly…like Call of Duty to Crytek’s games, one sells a metric shit-ton and the other doesn’t.”

Regarding the recent “ResolutionGate” or “#PS4noparity” debacles, Hutchinson said that the gaming community’s fierce reaction to the graphical disparity between the PlayStation 4 and Xbox is due to the idea that one version of a particular video is being held back, however he doesn’t think that notion has been a primary selling point for current-generation consoles.

In closing, Hutchinson had the following to say in summary of his previous statements:

“We should not be in a business that sells itself – we are, a little bit, but that sells itself on the flavour of like, gadgetry and technology. I think that’s a bad sign.”

“If our thing is ‘woo, the same exact thing you had before, at twice the resolution, instead of a new thing’… A new spin or an evolution, I think is much more interesting.”

Previously, Hutchinson revealed that Far Cry 4 is aiming for a target resolution and framerate of 1080p and 30 frames per second, respectively, on the PlayStation 4.

Furthermore, he stated the following in another interview  – “I think linear story games are really going to suffer in the modern marketplace.” Read more about that here.
