Before Ubisoft made the final decision to set their latest open-world, first-person shooter entry into the Far Cry franchise, Far Cry 4, in the Himalayas, ideas were thrown around about possibly setting the game in decidedly different areas or environments, such as Russia and South America.

Far Cry 4 – Different Settings
According to Ubisoft’s senior level designer for Far Cry 4, Vincent Ouellette, a number of different concepts for the game’s setting were thrown about, all with varying stories, characters, et cetera.
Ouellette had the following to say on the matter at this year’s EGX:
“It wasn’t like, bam, right on Himalayas, we were looking at the whole world at the same time.”
“We were looking at South America, we looked at Russia – we looked pretty much everywhere, but pretty early on we realised the Himalayas would be great.”
Armed with 3 good ideas, the studio pitched the idea to Ubisoft. Among them was Far Cry 4‘s narrative director and Far Cry 3‘s level design director, Mark Thompson.
In regards to Thompson and the studio, Ouellette stated:
“They have a good idea of the market, it’s good – they have different and interesting ideas on how each could go.”
“Thompson did different pitches – because not only did we have different ideas for locations but also different ideas for stories. There was a premise or story idea for each location that we picked. But the more we dug in each location the more we were sure the Himalayas were perfect for a Far Cry game.”
In closing, Far Cry 4‘s senior level director stated that one of the main reasons for choosing the Himalayas as Far Cry 4‘s main region was its sheer diversity, ranging from various flora and fauna that the studio felt gamers would appreciate and enjoy. Also…elephants.
Far Cry 4 will be available for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC on November 18th, 2014 in North America and Europe.
