Shape Up Wants You To Slim Down

Getting your daily exercise has just gotten easier thanks to a new game from Ubisoft called “Shape Up”. Shape Up is an Xbox One exclusive that will be released in November. This Kinect based title is focused on getting gamers in shape with various games and challenges that require full body movement. While the game promises to have many challenges to test gamers, only two were shown today at Ubisoft’s conference. The first challenge was called Piano Step, which is a rhythm based game where the player must use their feet to stomp in time with the rhythm 0f the music (essentially like Dance Dance Revolution or Guitar Hero for your feet.) After that, a second game was shown that had two Ubisoft employees doing a push-up contest. While that may sound boring at first, it was humorous to look at screen and notice heavy objects falling on their backs and as they progressed the objects became bigger and heavier, from pushing up a tank to a giant donut shop sign. Certain other games that were mentioned but not shown included running across the roof of a train and beating up criminals.

Games that are made for the sole purpose of fitness never seem to do well. If the game tries to hard to market itself as a fitness tool rather than a game, than it seems most gamers will turn away from it. However, Shape Up markets itself more as a game that just involves exercise, rather than something that is just used for exercise. I’m not saying that motion controls aren’t a big thing in the gaming industry today, I’m simply saying that most games that are motion controls for the pure sake of exercise seem to go ignored by the masses. What do you think? Do you think Shape Up is the right direction to get gamers more active and into exercise? Let us know in the comments.
