Those especially experienced with the original Halo 2 should be very happy today with 343 Industries announcement made at Gamescom regarding the ranking system within Halo 2 Anniversary. The skill-based ranking system will be present in the remake for its multiplayer, meaning in order to reach that mighty level 50, better known as the “Halo Ring” among players, you’ll have to live up to your skills.

This ultimately brings back a sense of competitiveness whilst allowing the more casual player to appropriately enjoy the game’s multiplayer. How? Well, it means the better players will match players on the same skill level, which is recognised through the ranking system, whilst the casual player is able to play in games matched with players alike.

Much to the dismay of many gamers, this already proven solid ranking system was abandoned in the more recent Halo titles, essentially getting rid of what most loved most about the multiplayer, so this is something that’s definitely pushing Halo back in the right direction, especially with a game as loved as Halo 2.

In the original Halo 2, you moved up in the ranks by winning games and performing well individually, whilst playing bad and losing would decrease your rank. Each playlist had an individual rank, encouraging lots of multiplayer gameplay to be the best in every gametype and such, whilst none-ranked playlists, otherwise known as social playlists, contained no ranking system, allowing for a much more relaxed experience, but not much overall satisfaction for the competitive player.
