Most people assume classic PlayStation games are either lost to time or locked behind expensive physical copies. There’s actually a working method to access a surprisingly large library — but it requires a bit of setup.
The trick is a US PlayStation Store account on a PS3, PSP, or PS Vita. The US store has always carried titles that never made it to European or other regional storefronts — games like the original Fatal Frame trilogy, Silent Hill, and the original Resident Evil games. You can’t use a foreign debit card directly, but US PlayStation Store credit is easy to buy from third-party retailers online, redeem on the account, and spend from there.
The PS3 is the most practical option. It’s the cheapest of the three to pick up secondhand, plays the widest range of titles, and doubles as a Blu-ray player. The store is slow and some titles have been removed over the years, but there’s a decent chance you’ll find something worth the effort.
Here’s the part that makes it genuinely worthwhile: if you purchased a game on the PS3, PSP, or Vita, Sony recognises that purchase today. When those classic titles eventually show up on PlayStation Plus, you won’t be charged again — and they become accessible on PS4 and PS5 without needing an active subscription. That’s how the original Resident Evil trilogy worked for people who bought it years ago on the US store.
It’s not the most straightforward setup, but for retro fans sitting on a dormant PS3, it’s worth dusting off. And if Sony continues expanding the classic game catalogue — which looks increasingly likely given recent PS6 development signals suggesting they’re thinking carefully about their platform’s long-term value — some of those US-only exclusives may eventually come to everyone anyway.
