Capcom has confirmed that Proto Man returns as a second playable character in Mega Man: Dual Override, the next entry in the Mega Man series, launching in Spring 2027 for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. The news arrived in a PlayStation Blog post published September 17, 2026, which offered the first look at Proto Man in action. Capcom had teased his return from the start, with fans able to hear his signature whistle in the reveal trailer.
Proto Man’s Return and Close Quarters Playstyle
Proto Man is Dr. Light’s first creation. He originally debuted as an adversary in Mega Man 3, then over time became a trusted ally who appears when Mega Man is in trouble. His last appearance as a playable character was in Mega Man 10. Next year marks the 40th anniversary of Mega Man, and the character’s comeback arrives within that milestone window.
Proto Man and Mega Man each excel in different areas, with their own distinct strengths, combat philosophies, and progression systems. Proto Man excels in close quarters with a more aggressive but technical playstyle. His Proto Buster has a relatively short range but high attack power at point blank.
The Proto Shield and Shield Actions
The Proto Shield returns in Dual Override, usable on both offense and defense as part of his special abilities. By defeating bosses, Proto Man unlocks new attacks, many of which revolve around his shield. He develops a versatile loadout of Shield Actions usable on command for more offense and mobility, but overuse causes him to overheat.
Custom Chips and the Override System
The Custom Chip system is a brand-new feature with more than 50 chips. Each chip grants an active ability or a passive effect for custom builds. The Override system lets both protagonists transcend their normal limits and amplify their abilities for a short period. Once Override ends, they enter a more vulnerable state, so timing the boost matters. Mega Man also surfaced earlier this year in a McDonald’s Japan collaboration teaser. Capcom recently launched Onimusha: Way of the Sword, which sold a million copies on its launch day. Mega Man: Dual Override can be wishlisted now on the PlayStation Store.
