Mojang has shared the first look at Minecraft’s next game drop, and the update centers on a new frozen biome and a new mob. Players will head underground into ice caves, a new cave biome that joins the dripstone, lush, and sulfur caves. The reveal came during the fall edition of Minecraft Live on September 26, 2026.
The ice caves are a freezing environment filled with ice, calcite blocks, and two new features: icicles and ice crystals. Icicles grow naturally on the ceiling, while ice crystals grow on the ground and emit a soft light. Mojang says both additions bring an ice-cold look to builds, and the glowing crystals also act as a source of light for underground structures.
Adventure as a Main Focus
Game Director Agnes Larsson said the long-term vision for Minecraft has adventure as a main focus area, and the new drop follows that vein of aspirational challenges. The ice caves feed that goal by giving players a new underground environment to explore and build in, and the team describes them as an ideal spot for a defensive ice fort. The game drop was one of several announcements at the showcase, which also detailed The Sift, the first new dimension in over 14 years coming to Minecraft next year.
Frozen Zombie Variant
The game drop also introduces a frozen zombie variant, which does not have a name yet. When this mob hits a player, it deals damage and applies a freezing effect on top of it. Some frozen zombies throw ice balls, which hurt on impact and are described as extremely cold. A player who takes a hit has to manage that freezing status while avoiding further attacks. During the show’s after-segment, Vu Bui explored the ice caves with Agnes Larsson and other creators, encountering the frozen zombie variant and plenty of icicles.
No release date was announced for the game drop, and Mojang did not reveal a name for the update or the mob. The team pointed players toward feedback.minecraft.net, noting the feedback site has been refreshed. More details are expected in the lead-up to its arrival.
