Ever wondered what it’s like for the villain who always kidnaps princesses? Well, with Nefarious, you’ll be able to find out! In this game, you play as the villain in a classic, 2D animated side-scroller, where you’re tasked with stealing a princess and defeating the hero at the end of each level. Josh Hano, the game’s creator aims to release this game on the PC, Mac, Linux and the WiiU.
So what’s the gameplay like? Depending on which princess you choose to kidnap, you’ll gain different abilities. For example, while holding a princess with wings, you’ll be lighter than air, enabling you to jump higher. Whereas if you kidnap a fire princess, it may have adverse reactions for your mechanical suit (but may make explosive ammo more effective).
Crow (our main character) has a power glove that’s able to shoot all types of grenades, from sticky ones to bouncy ones. Sounds standard enough, but you can use these grenades to grenade-jump to more inaccessible places.
I don’t know how to feel about this game, on paper it sounds like any other side-scroller, the main USP of being able to “play the villain” doesn’t seem to mean much. It just means at the end you aren’t fighting a boss, but rather a hero. The game promises differences though, they state that some aspects of a hero’s adventure and a villain’s adventure will be invariably the same, but in Nefarious, we’ll be able to explore some of the aspects unique to villainy.
The graphics and animation of the game look superb though. The characters move so smoothly, and the soundtrack in the background isn’t too bad either!
We haven’t heard much else about the game yet, but it’s one that could go either way. Hopefully there’s enough aspects to differentiate Nefarious from any other 2D side scroller. If you’d like more information on the game, check out their Kickstarter page here.
