European subscribers of Netflix will finally be able to watch CBS and Showtime’s Penny Dreadful. CBS Studios International and popular media streaming network Netflix have announced that they have come up with a multi-territory deal for the said CBS and Showtime series, as per Multichannel. Since the horror show started, there has been many eager fans that continue their support to the said show. It was a good move of Netflix to have this deal with CBS before some other network, such as Amazon or Hulu, to grab it first.
Netflix also nabbed the rights to stream Ray Donovan, Dexter, Elementary, Under the Dome, Deadwood and Jericho, aside from Penny Dreadful, in six new European markets as well as the Netherlands. There has been no announcement yet as to whether or not the series will be aired in North America, though the people there have the hope for it to come.
The territories included for streaming the series include the following: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Under the agreement, Netflix has the first-window rights to Penny Dreadful in the said markets. But this does not mean an exclusive right to air the series, just the first right to stream it.
Penny Dreadful is a British-American horror TV series created and written by John Logan, who also acts as one of the executive producers. The title refers to the penny dreadful, a type of cheap British fiction publication in the 19th century with a sensational subject matter. The series draws upon many public domain characters from 19th-century Irish and British fiction. Some of the main casts of the said show are Reeve Carney (as Dorian Gray), Timothy Dalton (as Sir Malcolm Murray), Eva Green (as Vanessa Ives), Rory Kinnear (as Caliban), Billie Piper (as Bronagh Croft) and Danny Sapani (as Sembene).
CBS expressed their gratitude for having a partnership with Netflix for the series mentioned. “We’re excited to have CBS’ world-class programming and Showtime’s acclaimed original series be part of Netflix’s launch in these territories,” said CBS Global Distribution Group president and CEO Armando Nuñez in a statement. We will see if the deal will be brought to other territories soon. Many people living in the United States have not seen the horror show yet. Penny Dreadful is a must-see series for those who are capable of watching a horror show.
